NBR Awards nominate ‘Licorice Pizza’ its best film of 2021

NEW YORK Licorice Pizza by Paul Thomas Anderson was named Best Film of the Year by the National Board of Review.

Anderson also won Best Director honors and film stars Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman were chosen for their groundbreaking performances in coming-of-age comedy. The National Board of Review is an organization of moviegoers, academics, and film professionals that dates back to 1909.

Will Smith (Best Actor) and Aunjanue Ellis (Best Supporting Actress) both won the award for their performances in Richard Williams’ drama King Richard. The title of Best Actress went to newcomer Rachel Zegler for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.

Other picks included Ciarn Hinds as Best Supporting Actor for Belfast ”; Asghar Farhadi for the screenplay for A Hero; and screenplay best suited to Joel Coen for The Tragedy of Macbeth, which was also chosen for Bruno Delbonnel’s photography.

Disney’s Encanto won Best Animated Feature; A hero won the award for best foreign language film; Questlove’s Summer of Soul (… or when the revolution couldn’t be televised) ”won the award for best documentary; and The Harder They Fall by Jeymes Samuel won the award for best ensemble. An honor of freedom of expression will go to the animated documentary on refugees Fleeing.

The awards will be presented at a gala dinner on January 11, hosted by Willie Geist. Last year, the National Board of Review chose Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods as the best film of 2020.
