the Harry Potter The famed franchise has taken fresh young faces and turned them into iconic actors over the course of 8 legendary movies. While Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint rose to fame how they grew up in the franchise, there were also some seasoned and well-known actors in the original cast. One such actor talks about the hijinks she had with Professor McGonagall’s Maggie Smith at the expense of the OG Dumbledore (played by Richard Harris).
The Golden Trio were definitely involved in some practical on-set jokes, and it seems the young wizards weren’t the only ones. In an interview with Express, Zoë Wanamaker, the actress who portrayed fan-favorite character Madame Hooch, shares how she and Maggie Smith bonded over Richard Harris. Here is how she tells it:
You meet so many amazing people in this business and he was one of them. There was a day when Maggie Smith and I were sitting in the make-up room doing crossword puzzles and chatting when Richard walked in, in full costume and just fell asleep. Because he had long hair and a beard, we tied it all up with little bows.
Richard Harris was the original Dumbledore, and his portrayal of the ancient wizard is one fans love. His long hair and beard with the elegant set of embroidered robes is an image that few fans have forgotten. That image in my own head is now forever replaced by that of a toddler lovingly putting bows in his grandfather’s beard while he’s being dumb in the living room, because the image that Zoë Wanamaker is painting is absolutely adorable.
Apparently, it wasn’t so sweet for Richard Harris, as he woke up angry that filming was cut short. I’m sure his frustration with a shorter workday than he was used to doubled when he saw himself in a mirror, covered in knots. In the same interview, Zoë Wanamaker lays out her amusement of Harris waking up angry in a fully bow-covered Dumbledore outfit:
Cut off at about 4pm and one of the vice principals comes in to say they were packing up for the day because the kids can only work a certain number of hours. Richard’s eyes open and he slowly gets up from the chair and he just yells “WHAT!” in full dress. He was so pissed off. I couldn’t stop laughing.
While it might seem like Richard Harris was frustrated that the set was shortening the days so the kids wouldn’t be overworked, that’s probably not the case at all. It’s a good thing that the whole Harry Potter franchise was aware of the children working there. However, Harris probably spent a ton of time in the hair and makeup chair turn into the Headmaster of Hogwarts, so he probably wanted to do as much as he could in character to make up for that.
Richard Harris was a great Dumbledore. Unfortunately, his death at the time of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets‘ the version caused the role to be recast (although not by Ian McKellen). That resembles his memory lives on in those with whom he worked, however, even though it is a memory covered in arcs.
