‘WKRP in Cincinnati’ star Howard Hesseman dies at 81
Howard Hesseman, the actor and comedian who played the role of DJ Dr. Johnny Fever in WKRP in Cincinnati and Charlie Moore on Head of class, died at the age of 81.
Hesseman’s wife, Caroline Ducrocq, confirmed his death to the hollywood journalist, adding that he died in a Los Angeles hospital on Saturday from colon cancer.
A member of legendary San Francisco improv group, The Committee, and real-life disc jockey who hit the airwaves as Don Sturdy, Hesseman broke into comedy in 1968 with a small role in Pickup; After spending the first half of the decade with one-off appearances on dozens of TV shows and bit parts in movies, Hesseman first landed a 13-episode part on Mary Hartmann, Mary Hartmann before scoring his breakout role, lewd, anti-disco DJ Dr. Johnny Fever on the ’70s sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, about a struggling radio station in the Top 40.
The cult sitcom ran for four seasons from 1978 to 1982; soon after, Hesseman hopped on another permanent gig, portraying the unemployed actor-turned-teacher on another beloved sitcom, Head of class, Hesseman spending four seasons in this role.
On the big screen, Hesseman has notably appeared in films like Flight of the Navigator, Index, Police Academy 2, the Bill Murray comedy Loose shoes and as manager Terry Ladd in the mockumentary It’s Spinal Tap.
“Howard Hesseman’s influence on his and subsequent generation of improvisers cannot be overstated. The first time I saw him on stage (Troubadour, 1971, with The Committee), I saw he was the real deal. He was a friend for 50 years,” Michael McKean, who appeared alongside Hesseman in Index and spinal valve, tweeted On Saturday.
“Howard’s character in spinal valve didn’t even exist until 24 hours before the shoot: we found out that the musician we hired to play Duke Fame couldn’t improvise, so Rob said, let’s give him a manager. I’ll call Howard. He blitzed it, of course.
