Photographers, artists, poets collaborate | Peninsula Daily News
PORT TOWNSEND — Photographers, artists and poets from Port Townsend High School are inviting the public to a local collaborative project which they will present for free this Saturday evening.
There is no admission fee to the 5-8 p.m. event at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St., where community members can explore original student artwork.
A student poetry reading will begin at 6:30 p.m. and community members will have the opportunity to chat with students about their art and verse.
The idea for the project, said Chris Pierson, an English teacher at Port Townsend Secondary School, was for students to write poems inspired by photography and other visual art by their classmates. , and conversely, that students who take photos and create art respond to poetry.
Port Townsend High’s English, Art and Photography classes worked together on the project, which includes approximately 50 photos and other visual art.
“We’re really excited about the students’ reactions to others’ work,” Pierson said.
“Poetry is about image and verb, image and action and reflection, so indeed the three mediums really go together more than people sometimes realize.”
Pierson worked on this project with David Egeler, photography teacher at Port Townsend High, and Michele Soderstrom, art teacher.
It’s called place-based collaboration, Soderstrom said, because student work is a way for them to engage with their community.
Hosting the event at the Cotton Building, she added, invites the public to reciprocate.
The Port Townsend Arts Commission funded the prints and rental of the space, while the Seattle Arts and Lectures Writers in the Schools program was also a partner, helping to fund this year’s high school poet-in-residence, Matt Nienow.
Northwind Art and the Port Townsend Main Street program also supported the project.
