Michelle Yeoh Says Chinese Movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Hasn’t Changed Asian Representation In Hollywood
Michelle Yeoh said the groundbreaking film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon has changed nothing to Asian visibility in the cinema.
The actress is highly regarded for her role in Everything everywhere all at oncewhich has become a sleeper hit since its US release last month.
Talk to The IndependentYeoh, 59, admitted that she is now suddenly known to the younger generation due to the success of the movie.
They can relate to me suddenly and I think that’s a big achievement, she said, adding: I’m very grateful that Everywhere makes a difference in their lives.
Elsewhere in the interview, she reflected on the legacy of the hit 2000 film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (directed by Ang Lee).
When asked if the film’s success has resulted in a significant change for Asian representation in Hollywood, Yeoh said no.
Because it was a period piece, the audience couldn’t relate to it, she said. It’s a beautiful film; it’s like watching poetry but it didn’t change anything for us.
Yeoh pointed out that although the film received 10 Oscar nominations and won four, no actor in the film received a single nod in the acting categories.
