Killer of ‘Matwetwe’ actor Sibusiso Khwinana to be deported after sentencing – Reuters
The sentence of Julius Lucas, found guilty of the murder of actor Sibusiso Khwinana, was handed down on Friday evening at the High Court in Pretoria.
The court sentenced the convicted killer to life imprisonment and an additional 23 years in prison.
Lucas, a Tanzanian international who stabbed the actor to death in 2019, was found guilty of murder, aggravated robbery and immigration offence.
He was also sentenced to 15 years for robbery and eight years for breaking immigration law after it was discovered he was in South Africa illegally. SABC reported. The court also ordered that Lucas be deported to his home country after serving his direct sentence.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the life sentence handed down, as NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana called Lucas an “opportunistic thief and this should not be seen as robbery gone wrong and he intended to kill Sibusiso”.
She went on to say that Sibusisos’ father said in his victim impact statement, “it was painful to bury a child unnecessarily out of greed.” The judge said Lucas showed no remorse and robbed South Africa of a talent.

Khwinana was popularly known for his role in the award-winning film Matwetwe. Khwinana, who starred in the film as Lefa, was stabbed to death during a robbery at the corner of Pretorius and Steve Biko streets in March 2019.
Khwinana and Lucas reportedly struggled over the phone, before Lucas stabbed him with a sharp object in the upper body.
Khwinana and her friend reportedly attended a screening of the film before the fatal robbery happened.
According to the autopsy report, Khwinana died from a stab wound to the heart.
Lucas has been behind bars since his arrest on March 8, 2019 and at trial he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
