Tom Cruise Returns to the Danger Zone in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’: NPR

Three decades after the original Superior gunTom Cruise returns to lead a new squadron of Navy fighter pilots in Top Gun: Maverick.

AILSA CHANG, HOST:

It’s been 36 years since Tom Cruise took flight as Pete Mitchell with the call sign Maverick, you know, “Top Gun” jet fighter pilot.

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN”)

TOM CRUISE: (As Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell) I feel the need.

TOM CRUISE AND ANTHONY EDWARDS: (As Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Lieutenant Nick “Goose” Bradshaw) The need for speed.

CRUISE: (As Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell) Ouch (ph).

CHANG: Now Cruise is back in the cockpit of “Top Gun: Maverick.” The sequel premiered last week at the Cannes Film Festival, and critic Bob Mondello says it’s the same but sharper.

BOB MONDELLO, BYLINE: The opening credits sequence is identical, almost shot for shot, as if to reassure the audience the filmmakers haven’t forgotten what worked the first time around: airmen readying sleek jet fighters in the light of dawn on the deck of an aircraft carrier, planes silhouetted against a sky just beginning to glow orange as the sun burns through the haze, then the whine of jet engines as a plane kicks in, then another and another and a roar as everyone hurtles into what Kenny Loggins is about to remind us is the danger zone.

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE SONG, “DANGER ZONE”)

KENNY LOGGINS: (Singing) Rev your engine, listen to its howling roar.

MONDELLO: After seeing the original “Top Gun,” what about the recruiting ads that were inspired by it after the 1986 Navy saw a 500% spike in enlistees wanting to become airmen?

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE SONG, “DANGER ZONE”)

LOGGINS: (Singing) Highway to the danger zone.

MONDELLO: We’re in the zone here, going straight to shots of a still seriously fit Tom Cruise, almost 60, speeding his Kawasaki Ninja, roaring down a highway towards what looks like a gigantic arrowhead to which it’s supposed to fly Mach 9. But, I mean, seriously, 9 with Ed Harris about to quit testing? How about 10? How about 10.2, just so they have something to say when he’s called to the mat?

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

ED HARRIS: (As Rear Admiral Chester “Hammer” Cain) Over thirty years of service, combat medals, citations, only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years, but you can’t get promotion. You will not retire. Despite your best efforts, you refuse to die. You should be at least a two-star admiral by now, and yet here you are, captain. Why is that?

CRUISE: (As Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell) That’s one of life’s mysteries, sir.

MONDELLO: Maverick is tasked with training new blood in the Top Gun pilot program, much to the chagrin of Jon Hamm, his immediate superior.

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

JON HAMM: (As Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson) I have everything I need to have you court-martialed and fired for dishonor.

MONDELLO: Yeah, well, Maverick has a guardian angel. His rival ace, Iceman, is now an Admiral, still played by Val Kilmer, whose off-screen battle with throat cancer brings significant resonance when he shows up here. There is a mission. Call it impossible, if you must. Admittedly, it’s a risky business to fly 30 feet off the ground at 500 miles per hour between the cliffs. You feel like Cruise could do it with his eyes wide shut, but they gave him a few good men to work with…

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

GLEN POWELL: (As Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin) What do we have here?

MONDELLO: …And a good woman…

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

MONICA BARBARO: (As Lieutenant Natasha “Phoenix” Trace) Guys, this is Bagman.

POWELL: (As Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin) Hanged.

BARBARO: (As Lieutenant Natasha “Phoenix” Trace) Whatever.

MONDELLO: …All with descriptive call signs that they earned in flight.

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #1: (As character) Where is he going?

BARBARO: (As Lieutenant Natasha “Phoenix” Trace) That’s why we call him Hangman. He will always hang you to dry.

MONDELLO: Others include…

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

CRUISE: (As Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell) Rooster.

MILES TELLER: (as Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw) Phoenix.

BARBARO: (As Lieutenant Natasha “Phoenix” Trace) We have to move, Coyote.

GREG TARZAN DAVIS: (As Lieutenant Javy “Coyote” Machado) Who are your friends?

JAY ELLIS: (As Lieutenant Reuben “Payback” Fitch) Payback.

DANNY RAMIREZ: (As Lt. Mickey “Fanboy” Garcia) Fanboy.

BARBARO: (As Lieutenant Natasha “Phoenix” Trace) What do they call you?

LEWIS PULLMAN: (as Lieutenant Robert “Bob” Floyd) Bob.

ELLIS: (As Lieutenant Reuben “Payback” Fitch) No, your call sign.

PULLMAN: (As Lieutenant Robert “Bob” Floyd) Bob.

MONDELLO: OK, from my point of view, it’s a cheap joke – I’m just saying. Director Joseph Kosinski clearly researched what the original “Top Gun” did, but he’s got a much better script to work with – not more plausible, exactly, but one that puts an adult Cruise in charge of all that testosterone on the loose from the film. a rampage that allows him to channel emotions the former couldn’t, like when Maverick tells Rooster, the adult son of his wingman, Goose, who died all those years ago, to follow his instincts.

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

CRUISE: (As Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell) You think you’re dead up there. Believe me.

TELLER: (As Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw) My dad believed in you. I won’t make the same mistake.

MONDELLO: Rooster is played by Miles Teller with a mustache almost as big as the flea on his shoulder and ripped abs that he and his fellow airmen display in team-building beach soccer rather than beach volleyball this time around, while this is designed to help the film barrel right past your plot objections before they have time to form in overstimulated nerve centers…

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #2: (As character) What is that?

MONDELLO: …By causing dizziness…

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

CRUISE: (As Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell) Hello, airmen.

MONDELLO: …The image format is exploding…

(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOVIE, “TOP GUN: MAVERICK”)

CRUISE: (As Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell) This is your captain speaking.

MONDELLO: …IMAX flight footage. Cruise insisted that these be filmed with the actors in flight, and they’re nerve-wracking in a way that the on-screen digital trickery just isn’t. I’m not going to say “Top Gun: Maverick” takes my breath away, exactly, but it’s one hell of a ride. I am Bob Mondello.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
