Baptists, Walmart criticize Mississippi rebel-themed flag
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) The Confederate-themed Mississippi flag draws criticism from two major forces in a culturally conservative state. Walmart says it will no longer display the state flag as it includes the Battle of the Confederate emblem. The Mississippi Baptist Convention calls on lawmakers to remove the Confederate symbol from the flag as many people are injured and ashamed of it. The governing body of university athletics and other influential groups are calling on Mississippi to change its flag. Republican Governor Tate Reeves says that if the flag is going to be redesigned, it should be done in statewide elections.
Mississippi Reports Largest Daily Increase in COVID Cases
Mississippi saw its largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases on Tuesday with 611 new cases. The Republican runoff is between Thomas Carey, a retired real estate agent, and Brian Flowers, who works at the Grand Gulf nuclear power plant. Thompson is the oldest member of the current Mississippi Congress delegation. In a non-partisan special election Tuesday in Jones and Jasper counties to fill a seat in the State House, Robin Robinson defeated Michael Walker. A third candidate appeared on the ballot but gave up.

He could set up another trial by abortion groups in a state that already has some of the toughest laws in the United States. The House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to pass the final bill. , which was approved by the Senate last week. Supporters say the bill would prevent abortion for Down syndrome or other conditions. Opponents say it would interfere with private medical decisions in a state with an abortion clinic.
