Indian actor and politician Vijayakanth suffers amputation
Veteran actor and politician Vijayakanth popularly known as ‘Captain’ has suffered an amputation and had his toes removed from his right leg. According to a statement released by his party, this medical intervention was carried out on the recommendation of doctors, due to blood circulation problems caused by diabetes. His party, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) assured that the leader was doing well and that his state of health was being monitored by doctors.

The statement released by his party also urged the public and party cadres not to pay attention to rumors circulating on social media. He added that Vijayakanth would likely be discharged from hospital within two days. Tweeting about the lead actor, whom he called a friend, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MP Stalin wished Vijayakanth a speedy recovery.
Once a top hero in Tamil cinema, Vijayakanth launched his political outfit in 2005 and witnessed a significant and encouraging run in his political foray. However, after a lackluster electoral performance in the 2016 State Assembly polls, his party’s prominence in the state’s electoral landscape began to gradually decline. In recent years, the actor has not taken an active role in politics or film, due to his health condition and has also made minimal public appearances. His wife Premalatha and his brother-in-law Sudheesh currently lead the party.
