Interview with Derek Trucks on First Coast News
Derek Trucks, the Amadeus of slide guitar, talks about connection, Layla, love myths and letting go.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Jacksonvilles has the venerable 12-piece Tedeschi truck band embarks on their “Wheels of Soul Tour 2022”. The first stop is Friday at Dailys Place Amphitheater with Los Lobos and Gabe Dixon.
Husband and wife pilot collective Tedeschi Trucks unveiled a bold four-album project titled I Am The Moon. A quadruple affair, based on a mythical Persian love story.
The four albums each have an accompanying film. It’s 24 brand new songs – over two hours of finely cut heavenly roots music featuring Derek Trucks, the Amadeus of slide guitar.
The I Am The Moon albums come out over the months. The first installment I. Crescent was released on June 3.
First Coast News spoke with Derek Trucks after a rehearsal:
When did you first discover the mythical Persian tale of star-crossed lovers that inspired the albums?
Derek Trucks: I knew the story of “Layla and Majnun”, but I had never read it. And that Derek and the Dominos File was such a big part of my life. At the start of the pandemic lockdown, our teammate Mike Mattison had this idea that we were all reading the same source material, so we were all thinking the same thing and maybe we could just write a few bits chewing on the same overall concept.
Derek Trucks: Mikes thought we were just done doing this Layla records live at Lockn and he had the idea to look at it in a different way. The original Dominos record is a point of view, Layla as this love object. It’s his desire for someone he can’t have, and how that drives you crazy and Mike brought up the idea, what did Layla think of it? What was his take on this story? That’s when the light bulb turned on.
It was a joint effort. In the beginning we all read the poem, me and Mike and Susan and Gabe Dixon and Tyler Greenwell, the writing core of the band. The language and imagery was so amazing and from different perspectives that there were tons of ideas. Once the whole band was able to come here to Jacksonville for writing sessions, there were only song ideas for days. It kept happening.
Four albums is quite a challenge. Was there ever a point in the process where you thought, why didn’t we just aim for an album??
It was such a productive time and everyone was prolific. Before we knew it, we had about 20 songs and we realized we had more than one album on our hands. We started thinking about it as episodes and even putting visuals with them. We said to ourselves, if we ever had to do something big and crazy, now was the time to do it.
Your game is so elevated and transportable. Where does your musical intuition come from? Where does your mind go when you play?
It’s hard to tell what’s going on in my head when I’m playing because the whole point is really to let go and not get too into your head voice.
Specifically, have you ever imagined celestial cobwebs hanging in the sky? Please tell me there is some kind of celestial cobwebs in the sky of your solo mind eyes. If there aren’t any, it might be time to bring them in.
For me, part of it is listening and connecting with the other musicians in the band and reacting to what they’re doing. Some of my influences might show up and I think that can add some ideas in the moment. I’ll see what I can do against the celestial cobwebs.
