Padres Daily: Breaking Bad; Hosmer’s left-handed connection; Nola’s bad luck; Machado Update

Hello,

It happens. And it happens.

Sometimes a manager feels like he has no choice but to field a weak team. And sometimes even a Cy Young contestant gets rocked.

Both happened last night.

You can read some of the details of Joe Musgroves first bad outing of 2022 in my gaming history (here). I also wrote about why the roster was missing Jake Cronenworth and Luke Voit and, of course, Manny Machado in yesterday’s game preview (here).

A lineup like the one the Padres put on the field yesterday against the Phillies was not that of a first-place team. And the Padres fell from a first-place tie with the Dodgers.

But Bob Melvin being willing to keep Cronenworth and Voit on the bench when the two needed a break could help the Padres be in contention for the top spot come September.

What happened?

Musgrove certainly wasn’t going to spend an entire season giving up two or fewer earned runs every start.

Bob Gibsons 1.12 ERA in 1968 is the lowest for a qualified starter in the expansion era, and he has given up three or more earned runs seven times this season.

It is what it is, Musgrove said. Everyone will have their day. Their time will come. You just take it for what it is. I mean, there’s a bad inning that I missed. A few bad pitches, but other than that I felt like I was throwing the ball well tonight. Put this one behind us and start a new streak next time.

The Phillies were 0-for-13 against Musgrove to start the game. Seven of the next nine batters had hits. Both circuits came on sliders. A double was hit on a substitution. Only one of four singles came on a four-seam fastball.

Maybe a little too predictable with the heavy spin,

Musgrove has many locations. He’s one of a handful of guys who throw six pitches at least seven percent of the time. He will often start a match heavy on some courts and heavy on others later on. There are times when it seems like three different pitchers during a game.

Last night he relied on his curve ball and slider consistently throughout. It ended up throwing its curve more than in all but four other starts and its slider more than in all but five other starts. Musgrove threw five of his 15 fastballs in the first inning, two in the third, two in the fifth and five in the sixth.

His use of the fastball was also down in his previous start. The day after that debut, he tested positive for COVID. He later admitted that he hadn’t been feeling well for a few days before being tested. His routine while on the IL (Friday to Tuesday) was disrupted prior to this departure.

A bit tired earlier in the game than before, he said. I felt like my fastball was fading. I was checking the board; going over 92 (mph) was a little tough, so we got away from that a bit in situations where I had runners on base, and I hadn’t done that in the past. So today I was relying heavily on the spin and felt a few balls could be hit.

Throwing his varied breaking grounds as much as he does is a big part of what makes Musgrove so successful. He would have liked to throw better ones and perhaps could have improved their effectiveness with a few more fastballs.

If you don’t have all your guns, that makes things a little more difficult, he said. But I’ve relied on breaking balls a lot the last two years, so I still trust those shots. I still feel like this could have been the right pitch, just a better location (and) I get away with it. But yes, (in) this situation, do a better job of reading the offense. I had a feeling that in those situations, when I backed into a corner, guys were going to start sitting on the spin. So any other night I had better life on the fastball, maybe I’ll use that more there. But I still have faith in those bullets that break. I will throw them away, live and die by it.

No luck

The Padres’ unluckiest hard hitter finally finds holes.

Now even ground balls go through, Austin Nola said.

Nola was 2 for 4 last night, including 1 for 2 on balls hit over 95 mph off the bat. He still has the team’s lowest batting average (.433) on balls face-off with an exit speed of 95 mph or more, but he has four hits in his last six balls hit that hard.

parents 95+

The focus was on low ball, line drives, Nola said. It’s the mindset of staying low all over the pitch. To left field, get the ball in the air. But everywhere else it’s low, low, low, low. Everything I do is based on that.

He said it was about a month ago that he started working on this approach.

He was down .193/.263/.253 on May 9. In 25 games since, he’s batting .288/.368/.375.

left-handed

No left-handed hitter in the major leagues hits left-handed pitchers as well as Eric Hosmer.

It’s really not even close. His .357 batting average against left-handers is 46 points better than the three left-handed hitters tied for second.

Hosmer entered the season averaging .251 in his career against lefties.

He’s batting .212/.271/.288 overall since May 13. But in 35 plate appearances against lefties, he’s batting .324/.343/.755 in that span. Last night he hit a home run and a single against Ranger Suarez, who allowed just one more home run in the 283 times he faced left-handed hitters in his career.

Hosmer said he had no idea he hit left-handers so well until it was pointed out to him.

Every once in a while, when you’re not doing so well, some kind of southpaw locks you in, makes you keep that front shoulder in there, he said. So maybe that’s just it.

Machado Update

You can read Machado’s progress in Jeff Sanders’ notebook (here).

It was written before the game, shortly after Machado did his first practice on the court since spraining his ankle on Sunday. After the game, Melvin confirmed that Machado also hit the batting cage yesterday.

It’s more about how he reacts to a bit more workload today, Melvin said. Well, see how the ankle feels tomorrow. Hes not going to be in the lineup tomorrow, but well see (the) response on his first day of some sort of workload.

Small bites

  • Left-handed reliever Tim Hill had an 11.12 ERA after nine appearances (5 2/3 innings) this season. With a scoreless inning last night, he has a 1.64 ERA in his last 12 appearances (11 innings).
  • Ha-Seong Kims’ second-inning single extended his hitting streak to six games, a career high. He has increased his batting average by 26 points (to .231) and on-base percentage by 34 points (to .317) since June 8. He beats 0.320/0.426/0.440 in 15 games during this period.
  • The Padres have played just two games this season faster than the two hours and 38 minutes in which last night’s game ended. The Padres have already played 12 games that lasted less than 2:50. They only played 12 games (over seven innings) quickly all last season. They average about the same number of runs, but allow fewer. They also have four starting pitchers who work relatively quickly, and their starting pitchers go further in games, which means fewer pitch changes.
  • Last night’s game was the first between the Padres and the Phillies this season that wasn’t a shutout. The Padres won 3-0 and 2-0 and the Phillies won the middle game 3-0 when the two teams played in Philadelphia last month.
  • The Phillies’ winning percentage of .679 (38-18) at Petco Park is the best of any team that has played more than 10 games in San Diego since the ballpark opened in 2004 and the best ever by a visiting team at any park. Yes, never. Everywhere. (Minimum of 50 games.)

Alright, that’s it for me. Speak to you tomorrow.
