Joe Turcel is dead. The actor, who was best known for playing bartender Lloyd in ‘The Shining’ and the creator of the replicants in ‘Blade Runner’, died at the age of 94 on Monday, June 27.

Confirmation of Joe’s death was his family. He breathed his last at Providence St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. No further details were provided regarding his death.

The actor began his film career in the late 1940s, with roles in “City Across the River.” He was scouted by director Stanley Kubrick while working on the B-movie ‘Man Crazy’ and along with ‘The Shining’, went on to appear in two of the late filmmaker’s other films, as a shooter during the final gunfight in 1956. “The Killing” and a soldier facing a firing squad in “Paths of Glory” (1957).

Joe previously recalled how Stanley told him about “Man Crazy”, “The picture was terrible, but I liked you and what you did and so I said I should hire that guy someday.”

Besides appearances in films such as “The Baked Street”, “The Bonnie Parker Story”, “The Hindenburg” and “Gordon’s Valley of the Giants”, Joe has also starred in television shows such as “Miami Vice”, “The Lone Ranger”, “Bonanza” and “The Untouchables”.

His last film appearance was in 1990’s “The Dark Side of the Moon,” but he reprized his role as Tyrell’s “Blade Runner” for a voiceover in a 1997 video game.

Shortly before his death, Joe penned a memoir called “The Misery of Success”, which his family plans to publish later this year. He is survived by his sons Craig and Robert, his brother David and two grandchildren.
