Ms. Marvel Actor Reveals Crossed Avengers Hopes (Exclusive)

Ms. Marvel Actor Reveals Crossed Avengers Hopes (Exclusive)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had many active organizations over its decade of storytelling. Of course, for starters, there’s Earths Mightiest Heroes, aka The Avengers. Then there were agencies like SHIELD, SWORD or AIM. Well, now, thanks to the Iman Vellanis Disney+ Ms. Marvel streaming series, fans can add another to the list.

Warning – the rest of this article contains spoilers for episode 4 ofMs. Marvel.

In episode 4 of the Kamala Khans adventure, she traveled to Karachi to try to get information about her new bracelet. Once there, the young hero ends up falling on a whole new sect of protectors: the Red Daggers.

The group, led by a man named Waleed, has been around for centuries, helping to defend Pakistan against external threats. Specifically, they’ve been tasked with protecting the bracelet itself from the underground as they attempt to stop the group from breaking the veil between realities.

The Direct got to sit down with the actor behind Waleed to talk about his character and this mysterious new organization.

Farhan Akhtar Talks Red Daggers & Avengers Crossovers

Waleed Red Dagger Ms. Marvel
wonder

In an exclusive interview with The Directs Russ Milheim, Ms. Marvel Actor Farhan Akhtar, who plays Waleed in the new series, spoke about his Episode 4 debut, the organization he leads, and what they might think of the Avengers.

This mysterious new group led by the character of Akhtars is none other than the Red Daggers. From what they hear, they seem to protect Karachi from all sorts of threats, especially those from other dimensions, such as illegals.

So what is the difference between them, and say, the Sanctum Sanctorum and its various wizards? According to the man behind Waleed, Red Daggers’ purpose is a little less enigmatic, and certainly much more clear and personal when it comes to Iman Vellanis Kamala Khan:

Well, I mean, if I remember correctly… I think in strange doctor, the explanation given was much more cryptic, I think Waleed is a bit clearer in explaining to Kamala, you know, what she has to do, you know, and what her purpose is, and that’s what the bracelet can potentially do if supported by the Illegals. So I just think there’s probably a little more clarity there

He went on to say that their the goal is to protect the bracelet at all costs, and that if they have other ends, only time and good handwriting will say:

Well, their goal is to protect the bracelet at all costs. This is their biggest goal. Because they don’t want the Clandestines unleashed on Earth, in the real world. So that’s one of the goals, that’s the one we see in there. Do they have other goals? I guess time and good writing will tell.

But where were they when Thanos wiped out half of existence? Akhtar joked that [they were] sharpening [their] blades, and casually waiting to join the party if they failed, which they did and not at the end.

The Red Daggers also have a fancy headquarters that was featured alongside their debut, and it looked stunning. The actor revealed that it was built from scratch, and that every crew member wanted [try out the secret door in the kitchen]:

It was built from scratch. It was on a sound stage. And just yeah, everything is really gorgeous, especially the whole kitchenette that you poke around and love to move into. Every member of the team wanted to try.

Waleed Red Dagger Ms. Marvel
wonder

Obviously, the Waleeds group aren’t the only ones watching over the Earth. So what do they think of some of these other teams, like the Avengers? Turns out Waleed wants a crossover.

Akhtar joked if anything, Waleed wants to be part of the Avengers, and he made it clear that he didn’t believe they looked down on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes at all:

No, I don’t… I don’t think the Avengers are despised. I think Waleed wants to be part of the Avengers. I think that’s where he is, I’ve been there so long, why don’t they recognize me?

He went on to say that he would think Waleed admires Thor the most, especially since the god of thunder was referenced in one of his Kamala speeches:

I would say maybe Thor. He also references him in the episode… I mean, normally when you talk about someone, when you take an example and talk about someone, it’s usually someone that you admire.

How far back does this Karachi-based group of protectors go? The actor mentioned how they were not given like any official number[s], but it certainly was a few hundred years:

No, we weren’t given any official numbers as such, but I mean, in terms of the history that they created, I mean, it even went back a few hundred years. I mean, few events from that time have been described in detail. But I mean, that was really the story because I mean, the story of, of India and Pakistan, the score played a huge role in its history. So it was all there in the story

The most of Ms. Marvel was filmed during the height of the pandemic, especially all the scenes they shot overseas. So what was it like going through this?

Akhtar explained how it had become the new norm, so it didn’t seem weird [at the time]:

You know, kinda weird, I mean, like they said it had become the new normal, so it didn’t feel weird. You know, at that point, I mean, I think now that things are back to the old normal, you know, if you were suddenly asked to, again, you complain a lot more . But there weren’t many choices and just being able to still work was great. You know, I mean having to spend 14 days in quarantine in your hotel room before you could even go out and meet someone was a whole new experience. Yeah, but you know, but it teaches you things you know, I mean, if nothing else, you just learned I mean, [people] take so many things for granted. This [can] just leaving like that.

The show also did a notable number of revivals earlier this year. Has the content of Waleeds been changed? According to the actor himself, What [audiences] see in the [fourth] episode was done roughly in the first [batch of filming]:

No, there were… a few… there were pick-ups that were made a little later. But above all, what you see in the episode was done pretty much in the first [batch of filming].

The Avenger’s Inspiration

The idea of different local organizations and supergroups is something that could be explored more in the MCU. Black Widow had Red Guardian, and now Ms. Marvel introduced red daggers (they seem to like the color red).

Even more interesting is how the group seems inspired by the Avengers. It’s not surprising, in and of itself, but often these bands have at least a tiny bit of anger towards the more popular bands, but the Red Daggers seem pretty confident in themselves and their purpose.

The fact that Akhtar thinks Waleed wants to join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes might suggest where the character might end up. Although Waleed appears to have met his death in the episode, there’s always a chance that his death could have been faked. Perhaps Akhtar’s character could return and finally get some well-deserved recognition from the Avengers in a future MCU crossover. Sounds like Waleed would make a good buddy for Thor to hang out with on his next space adventure.

While Waleed seems dead, his organization will live. If it was up to Ms. MarvelDirector Shareem Obaid-Chinoy, they would be involved in other events in the MCU sooner rather than later. The group may seem narrowly focused on the underground, there’s probably plenty of room to explore their larger purpose. Maybe Marvel can sneak in Inhuman references?

Ms. Marvel is now streaming on Disney+.
