Actor and writer Mike Walling dies at 69 – News
Actor and writer Mike Walling has died. He was 69 years old.
With a series of credits ranging from Not Going Out to The Smoking Room and ChuckleVision, Walling is best known as Eric, Jack Howman’s best friend and co-worker in Karl Howman in the long sitcom hit Brush Strokes (photo; Walling, at left).
The comic actor would have celebrated his 70th birthday next week. A cause of death is not yet known.
His agent told British Comedy Guide today: “We can confirm that our much loved and appreciated client, Mike Walling, unfortunately died at the age of 69.
“David Daly had represented him since the early 1980s, when he was well known for his roles in comedy series such as Brush Strokes. An extremely talented comedy actor, Mike also starred in British favorites such as My Family. and Birds Of A Feather and, recently, the character of Clifford Ford Coronation Street. A warm and kind man, Mike was greatly appreciated by all who worked with him. He will be greatly missed. “
Walling’s appearances in My Family were numerous, in the role of recurring guest as local curate. He also starred in the award-winning ensemble sitcom The Smoking Room, as Gordon.
Born in Salford in 1950, Walling found glory while teaching in the mid-1970s, as part of the double act of comedy Mr Carline & Mr Walling (photo) on ITV talent contest New faces. However, the double act did not last and Walling, he moved into television comedy alone.
In addition to acting, Walling was also a writer, with work including the first episode of ChuckleVision, in 1987.
Often working with fellow actor and writer Tony Millan, the couple were also the creator of the late 90s sitcom A Prince Among Men, footballer Chris Barrie, and written series including A Small Problem and Not With A Bang .
They also wrote episodes of Me & My Girl, The Brittas Empire and Birds Of A Feather.
