Free Events This Weekend: Enjoy Bollywood Night with Chicago Live! at Navy Pier in Streeterville

CHICAGO (WLS) — ABC7 countdown to Chicago Live! Party this weekend.

You can see the best of our city’s music, dance and theater community. How about a Bollywood, Chicago style? Hosea Sanders went to Navy Pier to show us what it looks like. On Saturday and Sunday, there are back-to-back performances there.

It’s Bollywood by the Lake by the Meher Dance Company. It’s fun, fiery and free!

Art director Gopi Engineer started all of this 12 years ago. The shows are growing in popularity and the classes keep growing.

“Bollywood dancing is all about having fun, letting go of your inhibitions and really channeling the joy you feel with the beat. Even if you don’t know the words, you feel the beats and have a great time,” said declared Engineer. . “Just the fact that our troupe can cultivate our tradition and heritage and work so hard at it, and bring their passion and joy to the stage as a group is significant.”

The engineer said that all kinds of people were taking the courses.

“Oh, we have everyone from kids ages 3 to 70,” Engineer said. “You know, the truth is, it’s contagious. It’s got a lively spirit. It’s joyful. There’s also a lot of depth and meaning, and the beats are amazing, so you can’t help but get up and dance.”

The engineer encouraged everyone to come to Navy Pier.

“I’m telling you to come, bring all your friends and family and learn some moves. We’re going to teach some moves at the end of our performance. Come really have fun and learn something new,” Engineer said.

The Meher Troupe makes everyone want to get up and do their own Bollywood moves.

“Come see Meher Dance Company, this Sunday on the east stage at 12:30 p.m. Trust us, you’ll love it,” the dancers said.
