Special teams on full display in Northwesterns loss to Miami, Ohio

Northwestern’s clash with Miami, Ohio saw bettors featured more frequently than Ryan Field ads for out-of-town corporate sponsors. The low-scoring affair between NU and the RedHawks provided the ultimate stage to display the chaotic brilliance that only special teams can deliver.

What unfolded Saturday was a performance for the ages for special teams units: 14 punts for 560 total yards, one blocked punt, one blocked field goal and one missed field goal. And, most fittingly of all, the game ended with special teams up front and center, with a game-winning field goal as Miami (2-2, 0-0 MAC) shocked Ryan Field in a 17-14 victory over the Wildcats (1-3, 1-0 Big Ten).

Barely three minutes into the competition, spectators eager for the action of a night of fall football had their first sighting of Miami punter Dom Dzioban. The RedHawks’ opening practice fell through and the Illinois native was tasked with pinning the Cats deep in their own half. That’s exactly what he did with a 36-yard boot.

In what has become a frequent occurrence, Akers trotted downfield shortly after his counterpart and responded with a 37-yard punt. As quickly as he left the field, Dzioban was called up, passing his opponent on a 38-yard punt.

It would take nearly six minutes before a punter returned to the pitch, but Dzioban didn’t skip a beat, hitting his next attempt 48 yards out. The next drive to Miami, shockingly, did not result in a punt, but rather something that is sure to scare any Chicago Bears fans in attendance. Graham Nicholson’s field goal attempt from 38 yards faded all the way, and sure enough, the ball fell from the right post.

On the next drive, looking for a fourth and a 5 in front inside RedHawks territory, NU opted to throw the ball instead of going for it. The resulting game? A 32-yard punt from Akers to pin Miami deep in their own territory. Seeing Akers’ solid outing for a quarter and a half, Dzioban decided to bring his best, throwing the ball 59 yards down the field to the Cats’ 20-yard line.

With half of the roll-up at an end, misfortune struck NU and Akers as a gaggle of white and red uniforms hastily swarmed him. The Nashville, Tennessee native, who had ample time on most of his previous punts, faced full pressure and saw his punt blocked and recovered inside the 10-yard line of Cats. The RedHawks capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a touchdown to tie the score at 7-7 just before intermission.

“The blocked punt is completely unacceptable,” coach Pat Fitzgerald said. “It’s something we’re working hard on…so it really shouldn’t happen, the way we do things.”

Saturday night’s special team scares continued into the second half in the only way possible: four straight punts. The sequence ended when NU’s third drive of the half resulted in a turnover on the downs and returned the ball to the visitors. Quarterback Aveon Smith led the RedHawks into field goal territory for the starting score, but Nicholson’s 43-yard attempt was blocked by Cats junior defensive lineman Sean McLaughlin.

“We just have to keep these guys because we’re doing good things,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s been consecutive weeks now that we’ve had a blocked basket.”

After a scoreless third quarter, NU and Miami scored in the final 15 minutes of action. Dzioban and Akers each punted in the fourth quarter, posting 49 and 48 punt yards, respectively.

Ultimately, a game with such profound repercussions in the special teams community could only end one way: the fate of the game resting in the hands, or rather the foot, of a specialist.

That specialist was Nicholson, the Miami kicker whose first two attempts were blocked and blocked, respectively. Nicholson finished his redemption arc by scoring the game-winning field goal with 21 seconds left, sending the RedHawks home with an upset victory.
