The intelligence, integrity, courage, elegance that was the yardstick of what to aspire to.”

Ahead, Hudlin shares more lessons he’s learned bringing Poitiers’ story to the big screen.

#1 Don’t take no for an answer.

Sidney’s parents did not have many material resources. They had no running water. They had no electricity. They had no formal education, but they gave her love, a sense of hard work and motivation, a sense of moral compass. They gave him everything he needed to conquer the world. So when we think about what we have and what we don’t have, and what we can give someone and what we can’t give someone, don’t twist it into focusing too much on material values.

When I started, being a black filmmaker was very difficult. The presumption among all studios was that there was no market for film noir and no one wanted to see it. Every day was a battle, so I used to be in battle mode. One day my wife said, “You are assuming too much about people’s hostility to what you’re trying to do. You don’t know what will happen. So why don’t you try anyway? This change in mentality was important. In my own career, I’ve seen so many obstacles come down, and I’ve seen my part in removing those obstacles. I feel more optimistic than ever, and looking back at Sidney’s career, he never lost that same sense of positivity.

#2 Honor your principles.

Sidney only accepted the roles of dignified, diplomatic and ethical black men. He took on roles that felt authentic to him. One of the breakthroughs I had doing this movie is that my greatest hits are when I’m one hundred percent myself. My successes come from doing what I believe in and what I am passionate about. When I deviate from that, things don’t work out, and I’m like, “Okay, well, that’s it.” So it’s very easy to stick to your principle.

#3 Failure is okay.

It’s rare to have a second and third act in life, but Sidney did just that when he started producing and directing his own movies. I try to challenge myself and others to try new things, but most importantly, be prepared to be bad. When you’re a child, you try everything. We hit a baseball, we play the piano, we draw a picture, right? Then when we get a bit older, we find out what we’re good at and stop doing things we’re not so good at. The simple act of learning and getting out of your comfort zone expands your awareness and confidence and can make a real difference, and sometimes you might surprise yourself.

Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
