‘Picard’ Gives Fans A New Modern Perspective On ‘Star Trek’ | modes

Returning to a beloved property almost 20 years after its end or more than 30 years since its creation can be a difficult undertaking. When this property is the beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation, this adventure or hike, so to speak, is even more difficult, as it tries to balance what worked in a different era with expectations and reflections of a new generation. Stand too close to what came before you and it becomes derivative and useless. Too far from what worked and why bother resuscitating the property in the first place?

Star Trek: Picard relatively well overlaps this very fine line, bringing back one of the most endearing characters in the series, but reframing a large part of his life and his actions with a modern point of view reflecting our concerns, our fears and our struggles in a frankness formerly defined by a vision perhaps too optimistic of our future. Coming closer to a more cynical result for Patrick Stewarts, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, now retired from Admiral Picard, could be deactivated, while others could be more seduced by such a radical departure from the signs exteriors of a franchise spanning nearly 60 years.

The new CBS All-Access show takes a page from its relaunched predecessor, Star Trek Discovery, offering a much more modern view of Star Trek with all the haptic visuals of the JJ Abrams 2009 Kelvin Timeline restart, but retaining the mythology of the ‘original run. It works at least here, because Picard is at the furthest point from the main timeline at the end of the 24th century. You could say that the writers managed to stretch their creative muscles a little more bound by the canonical restrictions of the chronology of the efforts of the prequel, because the show gives many fascinating glimpses in a galaxy of the turn of the century become placid and corrupt.

Picard follows the basic work of Star Trek of 2009, in which the events of the new timeline were created due to efforts to prevent the Romulan star from becoming a supernova. Towards the end of his career, Picard mounted a rescue mission to save as many Romulans as possible before the sun exploded. Starfleets’ plan under the leadership of Picards was to use a fleet of ships fitted with synthetic life forms to complete the rescue. But when synthetics turn to their biological masters, literally setting Mars on fire and destroying the fleet, their species is banned and Picard is forced to retire in disgrace.

Years later, living in his vineyard in France, Picard is convinced to return to action after being visited by a synthetic woman who seeks him to protect himself after shes attacked by assassins. The meeting invites to an adventure of 10 episodes through the stars which sees Picard struggling with his own mortality, his real destiny juxtaposed with his original visions and his own place left in the galaxy. Along the way, various faces from the Star Trek canon return and interesting questions arise about the future and the definition of life.

This new show owes much of its inspiration and creative vision to Logan, in which Wolverine, at the end of his life, is drawn into a last adventure at the end of his life. The similarities are much deeper, often focusing on the place of heroes in a world that no longer wants it. Much of the conflict in Picard both internal and external involves the retired admirals trying to force themselves to return to a lifestyle to which he is no longer used or equipped to manage.

Stewart still shines like the titular Picard, falling back into the role as if he had never left 18 years ago in the criticized Star Trek Nemesis. Just as he came back for a last incredible performance as Professor Xavier at Logan, Stewart returns to repair what preceded him and to lead, often alone, a new adventure that works at his strength. This Picard over 90 is no longer the lively captain he used to be. But Stewart brings a lot of energy to the role, even enough to still offer some of the inspirational speeches he was known for.

The pace of the broadcasts is slow at first, but resumes as the serialized mystery is revealed. Certainly, none of the new characters introduced has the presence on the screen or the interest of the public as returning members of previous shows, but that’s OK. Much of Picard is a fan service wrapped in a new package that still offers fans this fun Star Trek adventure, even if it’s different from what they remember. Even with this new approach, the main relationship at the heart of the whole season will deeply move almost all Star Trek fans.

Stark Trek, originally, has always been focused on optimism and the idea that humanity can and will improve in the future. This hope and this optimism are always present in Picard, but they are also tempered by a little realism, cynicism and yes, a little nihilism, which reflects our modern era. This new show, supported by the solid performance of a renewed Stewart ready to explore the titular character in more depth, may not be the Star Trek, many of us grew up watching children, but it explores the human condition for which openness is known which is perhaps, now, more important than ever.

The 10 episodes of Star Trek Picard are now available on CBS All-Access.
