When graduate libero Megan Miller arrived at Northwestern in 2020, she had an immediate impact, even amid a season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. A transfer from Nebraska, Miller recorded a team-high 118 digs in the spring of 2021 and was a key contributor throughout the fall 2021 campaign. She continued to shine as the 2022 Wildcats experience their best start in a decade, leading the team in the digs.

But his love of volleyball started long before he came to NU. Miller started the sport as a child, encouraged by his mother who was a coach and his sisters who played themselves. The Daily spoke with Miller about how volleyball has changed his life since then, from his time in Nebraska to his vision for the Cats’ 2022 season.

“Why I Play” is a Q&A where the Wildcats discuss their love for their sport and how they got started. This interview has been lightly edited for brevity and clarity.

The Daily: Was there a moment in your childhood that sparked your love for sports?

Miller: When it came time to start club volleyball, I actually didn’t want anything to do with it. Then, (when) I was nine years old, I told my parents that I wanted to try. I was on a team that was three years older than me and had one of the best coaches in volleyball by the name of Steve Shondell. This is where it started for me.

The Daily: What was your recruitment journey like?

Miller: My first visit was in seventh grade. I had received a lot of emails, phone calls – you were getting mail at that time. Once a visit happened, it kind of exploded. Once a college hears about it, they all want to jump on the bandwagon. I was truly blessed that way. I was so young, I didn’t even know what I wanted to wear to school the next day, let alone my biggest life decision so far. I made a decision my freshman year, so I was pretty young.

The Daily: What was the transition to Nebraska like?

Miller: I only had two days between the day I graduated from high school and the day I (went to) Nebraska. It was a lot smoother than I thought. The seniors when I was a freshman were phenomenal, and I still look up to them to this day. They took me under their wing and acted like I was their little sister.

The Daily: How was the transfer process to NU?

Miller: I went to the (transfer) portal in January (2020) and was in no rush to make a decision. I didn’t know if I was going to play volleyball at that time. I have just started talking to schools and have only made a few visits due to COVID. (NU) was a program I really wanted to come to because I had made a connection with the coaches… The academics were great and (I knew) it was a promising program.

The Daily: How has it been for you to be part of the program’s growth over the past few years?

Miller: It’s exciting, and I (believe) we haven’t reached our full potential yet. I hope that happens very soon because I think this group has a lot of potential – more than likely any team in the North West. It was exciting to watch, exciting to be a part of.

The Daily: Are there any lessons you learned from volleyball that you think translated to the rest of your life?

Miller: The biggest lesson I learned is that mental health is more important than anything. I am a big mental health advocate. I’ve been through a lot over the past few years. I’ve come to realize that if you’re not on the right track mentally, you’ll never be on the right track physically. Your sanity must be there first and foremost. Sometimes that means doing the hardest part and putting yourself first, even in times when you really don’t want to.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
