Daily Show host Trevor Noah has announced he will be stepping down as presenter.
In a video statement shared to Twitter on Thursday, Noah said that after seven years as the host of satirical news program Comedy Central, his “time is up.”
“It was absolutely amazing. It’s something I didn’t expect,” Noah said of his experience hosting the show. “I found myself thinking through everything we’ve been through. The Trump presidency, the pandemic, just the trip, no more pandemic and I realize that after the seven years my time is up.”
Noah, a comedian from South Africa, was a relative newcomer to American audiences when he was named host of “The Daily Show” after signing Jon Stewart in 2015.
“I want to say thank you to you guys who watched this,” Noah said. “I never dreamed I’d be here. It kinda feels like ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. I came here for a tour of what the previous show was and the next thing you know is is that I have been given the keys.”
Noah hinted that his decision to leave the show is rooted in his desire to return to more stand-up work.
“I spent two years in my apartment, not on the road, and when I got back there I realized there was another part of my life there that I wanted to continue exploring. I miss learning other languages, other countries and putting on shows,” Noah said.
He expressed his gratitude to his viewers, the crew of “The Daily Show” and Comedy Central, “who believed in this random comedian that no one on this side of the world knew about.”
“I loved hosting this show, it was one of my biggest challenges and one of my biggest joys,” Noah said.
