Actor Annu Kapoor loses Rs 4.36L to KYC account fraudster, cops manage to recover Rs 3 lakh

Posing as a bank official, an online fraudster tricked actor and film presenter Annu Kapoor out of Rs 4.36 lakh into providing bank details “mandatory under KYC” or know your customer. Oshiwara Police managed to recover Rs 3.08 lakh by approaching the two banks where the fraudster had transferred the amounts, and they froze both accounts.

According to police, Kapoor received a call on Thursday from a man posing as a bank employee and asked him to update his KYC. Kapoor provided a one-time password and bank details to the fraudster. In a short time and over two transactions, Rs 4.36 lakh was withdrawn from the actor’s account. Police said the private bank immediately called Kapoor to alert him to the suspicious transactions.

Kapoor went to Oshiwara Police Station and filed a complaint. The police contacted the two banks where the fraudster had made deposits and asked them to freeze debits from the account. According to the police, they have managed to recover Rs 3.08 lakh so far. A police official said the chances of recovering the amount were high if a complainant contacted them within two hours of the online theft, which is considered “golden hour”. Police said that once they learned of the recipients’ bank details, they contacted officials at the nodal branch to freeze any withdrawals from those accounts.

Police say the fraudster, who identified himself as Krishnakumar Reddy, told Kapoor that his account would be closed if he did not update the KYC account.

“Once the scammer got his banking details, he transferred Rs 2 lakh and later 2.36 lakh from Kapoors account,” a police official said. The Mumbai Police has registered a case under Sections 419, 420 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act.
