‘Bollywood’s Hanuman looks like a Muslim’: ‘Boycott Adipurush’ trends on social media
After ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and ‘Brahmastra’, another Bollywood film has seen harsh weather conditions, with ‘Boycott Adipurush’ trending on social media days after its teaser release.
Excitement for Om Raut’s film ‘Adipurush’ – starring Saif Ali Khan, Prabhas and Kriti Sanon – was quite high since its announcement. However, just hours after the teaser aired, netizens began criticizing the film for Saif’s “Islamic” look, unconvincing visual effects, as well as the costumes of the other targeted actors.
Comparisons are also made with Lord Hanuman from Ramanand Sagar’s “Ramayan” series at “Adipurush”. Actor Devdatta Gajanan Nage plays the role of Hanuman in the film.
Netizens have claimed that Hanuman’s look in the film also has similarities with Islamic attire.
One user tweeted: “Hanuman from Bollywood looks like a Muslim #BoycottAdipurush”. Another wrote: “After 35 years, Bollywood has converted the ‘grace’ of the arrogant Ravana and Hanuman Ji into Mughals.”
“Hanuman in the Ramayan. Muslim man in #Adipurush, Note: No Hindu wears a beard without Mustache. This movie should be banned… They defame our Ramayan. They show Ravana and Hanuman with beards like Mughals without Tika on their forehead,” one added.
Earlier on Tuesday, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra reportedly expressed anguish over the depiction of gods in the film.
Mishra said that the Hanuman wore leather clothes while the description of his appearance is clearly given in the Hanuman Chalisa.
“There are objectionable scenes in the teaser. Such scenes hurt religious feelings. I write to the manufacturer Om Raut to remove these scenes. If he does not agree, there will be legal proceedings,” the minister said.
“Adipurush” is a story from the Ramayana. Prabhas character is called Raghav which is another name for Lord Ram. Saif plays Ravana while Janaki (Sita) is played by Kriti Sanon.
The creators of Adipurush spent a fortune on visual effects. The film was reportedly made on a budget of over Rs 400 crore, most of which was spent on visual effects, but it seems the release fell far short of what audiences expected.
