Veteran actor Asha Parekh, also a trained classical dancer, has said in a new interview that Bollywood no longer portrays Indian culture, especially in terms of dance. While she thinks people have forgotten their Indian roots these days, she called filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali an exception. She also shared her displeasure with remixes of her songs. Asha Parekh made her acting debut when she was just 10 years old in the movie Aasmaan. She rose to fame when she starred alongside Shammi Kapoor in the 1959 film Dil Deke Dekho and starred in over 95 films during her career spanning over 50 years. Some of his best films include Caravan, Kati Patang, Teesri Manzil, Baharon Ke Sapne and Pyar Ka Mausam.
At an event in Boston, Asha Parekh told Connect FM Canada in Hindi: We have forgotten our own dance traditions and are trying to copy Western dance. I think you’ll agree when I say that, but the kind of dancing you see these days is not our style. It’s not our culture. And we have such a rich dance tradition that every state has its own dance. And what do we do? Were trying to copy western dance styles. Sometimes it feels like doing aerobics, not dancing. It hurts my heart to see this.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is an exception. He’s bound by it, see. You can see the respect for Indian culture in her work, she added. She also said that the remixes of her songs were horrible. The sweetness of the original songs is drowned out by loud drums and beats in the remixes. Words are lost, she explained why does not promote new movie songs.
She recently received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honor in cinema. After receiving the award, she shared her feelings with the ANI news agency. The moment that award arrives, it feels good. I feel like all my wishes have now been granted… At first when they (the government) told me that I would get this award, I couldn’t believe that I would get it.
