Saroj Khan, choreographer of more than 2,000 Bollywood songs, dies at 71

Bollywood’s first female choreographer Saroj Khan, whose sizzling dance routines have brought hundreds of films to life, died on Friday, unleashing further grief in an industry already reeling from a string of recent deaths.

Khan has choreographed over 2,000 numbers in a 40-year career that has seen his work with superstars like Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor to create dazzling song and dance routines that are a hallmark of Hindi movies.

A spokeswoman for Guru Nanak Hospital in Mumbai told AFP that Khan, 71, was admitted to the hospital on Thursday evening after complaining of breathing problems.

She “was declared dead around 2:30 am” after suffering a cardiac arrest, said the spokeswoman.

Born Nirmala Nagpal, she joined the industry as a child actor at just three years old, but quickly started dancing instead, starting as a backup dancer before becoming an assistant choreographer at 13.

She would have changed her name to Saroj to avoid censorship by conservative parents who did not approve of her career choice.

She also fell in love with B. Sohanlal, her much older mentor who was married and father of four.

Stung by his refusal to leave his first wife, Khan, who converted to Islam, became a single mother of two while still a teenager and left the relationship to start working alone.

– “Incredibly talented” –
She got her break in 1974 with “Geeta Mera Naam” (“Geeta Is My Name”), becoming the first female choreographer in Bollywood.

She had no formal training in classical dance, but learned on the job and struck a blow in the 1980s when her collaborations with two of the best Bollywood stars, Dixit and Sridevi, became leaders.

The 1988 issue of “Ek Do Teen” (“One Two Three”), choreographed by Khan, made Dixit an overnight star, and the actress was among the first to pay tribute to the woman she called her teacher.

“I am devastated by the loss of my friend and guru, Saroj Khan. I will always be grateful for his work to help me reach my full potential in dance. The world has lost an incredibly talented person,” Dixit tweeted.

Khan has dominated Bollywood dance floors for the next decade, producing hits such as “Hawa Hawaii” from 1987, “Choli ke Peeche” from 1993 (“Behind the Blouse”) and “Dola re Dola” from 2002 (“I Swayed”).

“You gave us and the industry, the pace, the style, the grace of the movement,” wrote Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan on Instagram.

“When she danced, it was like looking at an entire book! Everything she meant was there so clearly on her face and in her body language,” wrote actress Kajol.

“It made dancing easy as almost anyone can dance, a huge loss for the industry,” said superstar Akshay Kumar.

She has won three national awards for her choreography in the Bollywood films “Devdas” and “Jab We Met” (“When we met”) and for the Tamil film “Sringaram: Dance of Love”.

Actress Kareena Kapoor, who starred in “Jab We Met,” said that Khan taught her to “like to dance, smile and smile through the eyes.”

“There can never be another,” she wrote on Instagram.

His latest film was “Kalank” (“Blemish”) from 2019 with Dixit.

She was also a popular television presence, hosting an educational dance performance called “Nachle Ve” (“Dance”) from 2008 to 2011.

In her introduction to the program, she said, “Dance is my life. If there is no dance, there is no Saroj Khan.”

Bollywood was shaken last month by the death of actor 34-year-old Sushant Singh Rajput. Police said he committed suicide.

In April, two luminaries, Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor, died within a few days of each other.

Wajid Khan, one of the best composers of Bollywood dance acts, died at 42 years of age from a coronavirus in late May. Shortly after, the famous filmmaker Basu Chatterjee died at the age of 90.
