Ennio Morricone, influential creator of music for modern cinema, dies at 91

 


Ennio Morricone, the The Italian composer whose atmospheric scores for spaghetti westerns and some 500 Whos Who films by international directors made him one of the most versatile and influential music creators in the world for modern cinema, died on Monday Rome. He was 91 years old.

The Ecstasy of Gold, the theme song for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, was one of Mr. Morricones’ biggest hits. It was recorded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma on an album of compositions by Mr. Morricones and used in concert by two rock groups: as closing music for the Ramones and as an introductory theme for Metallica.

Mr. Morricone looked professorial in bow ties and glasses, with locks of flying white hair. He sometimes hid in his palace in Rome and wrote music for weeks, composing not at the piano but at the office. He heard the music in his mind, he said, and wrote it in pencil on paper for all parts of the orchestra.

He sometimes scored 20 or more films per year, often working solely from a screenplay before projecting the rushes. The directors marveled at his range of tarantella, psychedelic cries, swollen love themes, tense passages of high drama, majestic evocations of the 18th century or strange dissonances of the 20th and the ingenuity of his silences. : he was wary of too much music, overloading an audience of emotions.

He composed for television films and series like The Sopranos, wrote about 100 concert pieces and orchestrated music for singers including Joan Baez, Paul Anka and Anna Maria Quaini, the Italian pop star known as Mina.

In 1940, he entered the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, where he studied the trumpet, composition and direction.
