Loki returns to the world of Supernatural for The Winchesters.
TV line revealed that Richard Speight Jr. would reprise his role as the Norse God of Mischief for The Winchesters. Additionally, Speight will direct several episodes of the sequel series. The actor has already directed 11 episodes of Supernatural and also went behind the camera to Lucifer, Walkerand Kung Fu.

“Richard is an old friend of mine, so it was a matter of when, not if,” The Winchesters said showrunner Robbie Thompson. “I think it was in New Orleans actually when we were shooting Episode 2, so I wasn’t in the writer’s room, obviously. But I was reading their notes and I was like, ‘Hey , wait a minute… and then I just got really, really excited because it was like [the writers had come up with] an opportunity for us to welcome a friend we’ve seen before, but maybe not in a way people expect.”
The Winchesters are about to get tricky
Speight’s Loki is described by The CW as “dangerous” and “cunning”, all covered in a “fancy veneer to mask his malevolence”. The trickster deity “thrives in twisted, mayhem-sowing games – and hunters are one of his favorite toys”.
Supernatural viewers will know this intimately, as Loki’s many appearances on the show have brought with them some of the show’s most meta episodes. At first using his mischievous powers in more “simple” ways, Loki eventually began to warp reality to massive levels, throwing Sam and Dean into alternate realities based on TV and movies. But things got even weirder from there.

As the war with the Archangels grew, Loki revealed himself to be one of them. In fact, Archangel Gabriel, the real Loki was saved by Speight’s character and allowed him to assume his identity and personality. Gabriel relished the opportunity, which regularly brought him into conflict with the Winchester brothers. Gabriel and Loki would even end up going head-to-head, but that will all be far in the future when the character appears in the spin-off show.
It’s not yet clear when Speight will arrive, but he likely won’t be the only familiar face on the show. Felicia Day said she was actively campaigning to return as Charlie on The Winchestersalthough his return will be much more complicated given his lack of divinity.
The Winchesters airs Tuesdays on The CW.
