Unquestionably, the early twenties gave us the best of Bollywood. The viewing ability of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Veer-Zara, Dil Chahta Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gahm, Kal Ho Na Ho, Black, Munna Bhai MBBS and many other films from this era is unparalleled.

Does that mean we disapprove of remakes? The abrupt answer is no. It would be unreasonable to consider the yet-to-be-released remakes glib until we see them for ourselves. It would be equally absurd to claim that those previously distributed are totally devoid of merit.

But therein lies the problem, perhaps with Bollywood’s basic ideas about remakes: do they actually improve on the original?

Because if this were not the case, the purpose of the remake would be pointless. Until a decade ago, many films in the South Indian film industry were remakes of films originally made in India. Those days are long gone and, indeed, the tables have turned.

Does Bollywood suffer from a shortage of talented writers or are they just unmotivated?

Akshay Kumar, one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, has been making biopics and remakes all the time. Aamir Khan’s recent Laal Singh Chadda, a remake of the Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, flopped at the box office. With expressions identical to those in his later films, audiences in some parts forgot whether they were watching PK, 3 Idiots, or Lal Singh.

There was a time when audiences eagerly waited for movies to come out, and now there’s barely any buzz. Experts believe that the main reason for this downfall of Bollywood is nepotism and not opting for new talent.

The same clichéd rom-com productions fail to attract audiences, and the worst part is that expressionless and skillless actors are taken.
