My first exposure to RuPauls Drag Race performed in a cramped gay bar in New York City where an episode was playing in the background. Although I don’t know anything about the show, I couldn’t look away because I was transported for an hour from the reality that had recently elected Donald Trump president. But while I was transfixed by flawlessly styled wigs, glamorous outfits and queens’ balance, I didn’t know why Farrah Moan thought Valentina didn’t like him, or why Charlie Hides offered so many excuses why she couldn’t make sushi. I only knew I wanted to know.

Drag race debuted in February 2009, making it one of the first great works of art of the Obama era. At the time of its premiere, the trail was decidedly not common, and the production values of the first seasons could be raw. 17 seasons, 153 competitors and 13 Emmy Awards later, the show and its spinoffs RuPauls Drag Race All Stars have turned into a lavish cultural behemoth in which the queens show their stuff and are eliminated episode by episode until the finale. Along the way, viewers get to know them both personally and professionally, learning about their lives while being seduced by their talents. These include drama, makeup, fashion design and construction, singing, comedy, dance, celebrity impersonation, lip sync and writing, while staying true to the distinctive mark of the queen. Combine this skill set with dynamic personalities, subversive art and a competitive environment, and you have a recipe to compete with entertainment.

Each season of Drag race presents performers who radiate the four traits that RuPaul values most in queens: charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. (Consider the acronym formed by these traits for a sense of humor in the shows.) Although there is no bad place to start watching, you can’t go wrong with Season 6, Episode 2, RuPauls Big Opening: Part Two. Season 6, unlike most others Drag race seasons, divided its premiere into two parts, leaving more time to present the cast. Seven different queens compete in each episode, two winning queens and two queens walking away before the groups merge. Part of the fun of everything Drag race The first of the season is that viewers are not the only ones trying to get to know the queens: they are also trying to get to know each other. The group of queens we meet in the second part goes from the kid’s sex club to the Australian expatriate singer Courtney Act to the insult of the comic strip Bianca del Rio. The variety of these queens makes it a pleasure to watch them, both as individuals and as they interact with each other.

The first challenge of the episodes, a photo session where the queens pose in a boudoir pillow fight with the men of Pit Crewmuscular, lightly dressed who appear regularly in the series is both very silly and a real test of the skills of the queens . How far can they control the focus of the cameras when, as Joslyn Fox says, feathers are flying everywhere? How do they adapt their characters to slide to shine in this scenario? This comes easily for some, like Courtney, who skillfully flips her wig and declares, Courtney knows how to make it sexy. It is natural. It is more difficult for Bianca, inspired by the clown, who nevertheless takes up the challenge. The photo session is fun and ridiculous, but above all, it surprises queens and gives the viewer a glimpse of their state of mind.

The following design challenge is a classic start Drag race season: each queen receives a different themed box full of fabric and accessories, from which she must create a full-fledged look to wear on the runway. As with the photo shoot, the queens’ ability to apply both their skills and their style is essential and shows how the show interacts with competitors on a more personal level, while remaining very competitive. (Milks plan to incorporate facial hair into her toga-inspired look causes shocked reactions.) One of the defining aspects of Drag race is that its competitors receive equal screen time as performers and as people, documenting their transformations and giving viewers insight into the process and the personalities behind the art.

Because drag is a subversive, controversial and inherently queer art form, each Drag race episode is a deep reminder that staff are political. In many ways, my first impression of Drag race has stayed pretty much the same: it can really look like an alternative universe that centers, loves and celebrates LGBTQ people and the art they do. Drag race is by no means a utopian spectacle has a thorny history when it comes to trans representation and sensitivity, but it’s still a massive platform for excellence and queer representation through the queens it presents, and RuPauls Big Opening: Part Two is a perfect entry point. I can’t think of a better and more necessary time to enter this alternative universe and embrace art, joy and resilience Drag race popular.

RuPaul wears a fluffy blonde wig and stands in a purple mist. In the background, two purple eyes resembling beasts.

Available to broadcast on Hulu.
