Sam Boyd was writing a feature film when he decided to write something on the side every time he “hit a wall”. As he took time to flesh out his story, “something clicked” and turned into a pilot for what was to become HBO Max’s most important series, the anthology Love life.

“It’s just this chain of dominoes that fell the right way,” says Boyd. The Hollywood Reporter. Its pilot, inspired by the exploration of how our relationships make us who we are, caught the attention of Paul Feig and Anna Kendrick, who had just left A simple favor. Kendrick was quickly chosen to direct the series, his first regular role in the series.

While Love life was originally slated to be part of the HBO Max launch slate, the series – after the new coronavirus stopped production in the industry – would become the streamer’s most vital show after the meeting Friends’ high-level could not be filmed. A few days after its launch on May 27, WarnerMedia executives were impressed by the consumption of the show (HBO Max does not publish audience data), the streamer accelerated Love lifethe deployment of an eight-week race planned in three weeks more worthy of frenzy.

Love life focuses on protagonist Darby (played by Kendrick) as she embarks on a journey to find love and herself. The series uses love both as an adjective and as a verb as viewers watch the trials and tribulations of Darby’s love life, while exploring the complexities of her identity as she grows up into a satisfied and satisfied woman. . Shortly after its debut, the anthology series was resumed for a second season (marking the first renewal of HBO Max) which will follow the journey of a new protagonist towards love.

Below, the creator and co-host chat with THR about Love lifeHighly publicized launch, releasing a rom-com without relying on the tropes and its plans for the second season (which may or may not include COVID-19 in its story).

Love life was HBO Max’s first original and most publicized at launch. Did you feel pressured after inheriting this distinction when friends the reunion has been delayed?

You would think there was pressure and I guess so, but I didn’t really feel it. It was always the people we worked with and the fact that they understood what our show was and supported it. We were lucky to have finished filming. They had other shows that they planned to release at the time and everything was thrown into disarray throughout the industry. We were always supposed to be one of their first shows and it wasn’t until the very end that we became only a. It was nice to be a priority for a new business.

Deployment has been accelerated from its original exit plan. Is this something you have been waiting for? Did you write the first season with the hope that it would be a weekly rollout or a frenzy?

The way it happened made perfect sense, especially with the half hour show. The episodes go by so quickly; even if someone doesn’t like the show, it’s pretty digestible if nothing else. Whether we end up publishing them all in the future or in batches, the show has certainly benefited from more than one [episode drop] at a time.

What were the challenges of diving into the complexity of a character in small increments?

One of the things with something that is more character-oriented and the concept lower, it’s easy for these things to feel boring. When we pack so much and, in a given episode, we conspicuously observe the initiation, the rise, the maintenance and the disillusionment of an entire relationship in half an hour. We still found room for quiet moments and this is by no means a sensory overload. What has helped to anchor this season is that it has been around eight years in this person’s life and we have five hours through these types of capsules that describe each of their relationships and show their growth. It stabilized us. We tried to be as creative as possible because we knew it would be boring for viewers if, every time, it was like “OK, she meets him, they love each other and they dislike each other and they separate. “We had to get out of this as soon as possible.

Each of Darby’s contenders has been designed to represent experiences of universal dating in one way or another. How did you work to avoid the traditional rom-com tropes and overturn expectations?

I love romantic comedies, but we used the genre as a Trojan horse to explore other things, like his relationship with his mother. It all started with all the writers who said, “What did we suffer from? Who did you fall in love with? Who did you fall in love with? What are these stories?” We have used these anecdotes and real experiences as starting points for authenticity and specificity. It seemed more real than you would normally see in a romantic comedy.

The person “supposed to be” from Darby is not presented until the last episode. Was it always intended to show less of their dynamics compared to others relationships?

We talked a lot about the end and wanted to look at the things that work and we felt real. There are so many ways to end a story like this and it was really intimidating. What are we trying to show? What are we trying to say? For example, if you end up with Augie (Jin Ha), then we say, “Oh, hang in there and you can make a lot of other mistakes, but you’re really going to end up with the person with whom you were 22. “It happens sometimes. But how often does this really happen? What we tried to show with Grant is that you fall in love once again and how can we have the end be the story of his love for the last time, but also the story of the situation in all the other aspects of her life, with her friendships and her family and her professional life. In the end, it seemed like the right way to end this story and show that it ends up being romantically fulfilled, but also as a way to try to minimize that and not do everything for the guy. It’s one of those things to come back to a cliché: the journey is the destination.

We knew from the start that it would be an anthology, season two focusing on a different love story. How much Darby will remain in the central narrative? How much of the rest of the cast will come back and how much will they be involved?

We really want season two to feel interconnected with the world of season one, while starting again and following a new character and telling us a whole new story that feels different, unexpected and fun. I don’t want to say too much about the ways it is connected, but it is important for us that it has the impression that it is taking place in this extended universe. We have a fun way to keep Darby floating in this world. It’s more of a stick pass for this new protagonist. We would never want to give Darby a little rant by branching out into another story that is not as closely related to him. We want our new protagonist to be in the foreground, even if he is still in the world of the first season.

Would you consider turning the central character into a person of color – or telling a love story from a human perspective?

Depending on the number of seasons we have to do, we always want to change and look at the protagonists of different genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations and socio-economic classes. The hope is that it looks like Love life takes place in the real world and shares a universe with these characters. This would include the following men and LGBTQ characters and all of the many types of people that make up our world and what it is like to be a person and love people.

As you consider options for the second season, will COVID-19 be written in the series?

I think in many shows you may be able to get away with a parallel universe, but in the first season we really looked at the type of cultural markers from the era we were watching and places. The first season takes place from 2012 to essentially just after New Year’s Eve 2019, six months ago and before everything goes crazy. I think we are a spectacle that it would be difficult for us to claim that it never happened, especially with everything. I want it to look like our world and recognize as many events as possible, but we also don’t want a bunch of episodes going on on Zoom. Even when we were shooting a final, we were doing collections in March just before everything stopped, I thought to myself: “Should we recognize it? If it’s a few months after New Year, should we give it a try stay six feet from this elderly woman in the art gallery? Can’t they hug? “We sort of bypassed her for the season one finale, but we’ll definitely have to find a way to incorporate it into season two, even if it jumps on it. If this happens in a gap between episodes, I think it should happen in the world of our show. We will see.

New York is a central character in this show, but wAre you thinking of shooting the series elsewhere – perhaps abroad, where the pandemic is better controlled?

Nothing is off the table. New York is a big part of history, but there are many magical cities in the world. Right now, we’re focusing on New York. We want him to feel like in the first season with someone walking this side of the street in New York, then we go across the street, we pick up with someone else and let’s follow his life that he’s been living all this time in this city too. It is an important part of this next story that we tell, but in the end, as we progress, we want to mix things up as much as possible and never tell the same story twice. This will therefore involve changing all possible elements.

Now that the first season and the story with these characters may be over, what do you hope people will get out of this chapter?

We worked very hard to tell a story that was entertaining and satisfying for the audience, but which also seemed to be true, perhaps a little more melancholy or, at times, sadder than other romantic comedies. I think a big part of this is that there are no answers. A big part of that was that we didn’t want to say anything about it, for us to just show what it’s like to be in love [and] hope people see themselves there and recognize the world … and know that love is just as difficult for us.
