Former X Factor star Janet Devlin reveals battle against alcoholism

Former X Factor star Janet Devlin revealed that she has been battling alcohol addiction for years.

The 25-year-old singer shared an emotional video on Instagram about her ongoing battle against alcoholism.

Janet, who appeared on the X Factor in 2011 at the age of 16, spoke of her struggles with her nearly 88,000 followers on Instagram.

She said that she was almost dead from drinking too much and that now "so many great things have happened since I got sober and I could never have seen that".

The Northern Irish beauty legend for the heartfelt video included: "Hi, Im Janet and Im an alcoholic.

"I am very grateful to that. I taught young people that I am an addict and it may sound horrible, but it was a blessing. A blessing to learn that there is more in life than experiencing emotional and physical pain. "

Her fans flooded her message with comforting words of support. One user posted: "You are a strong woman, never stop fighting."

Another commented: "It's very brave of you to admit it. Just know that all of your fans are there for you."

A third wrote: "Big hugs for you, alcohol is a beast that affects so many people and ruins lives, well done for being so brave in talking about it."

And a fourth offered support with, "We love you for being you. All of your weaknesses make you the person that thousands love."

She went into the details of her battle on her YouTube account, where she has 529,000 subscribers.

Calling the video "My Alcoholism – 5 Years of Recovery", she explained how alcohol had initially boosted her confidence.

She said, "That voice in my head that just hated me and wanted to over-analyze everything ended up being silent and it was great (when she drank)."

She also explained how her alcohol tolerance quickly skyrocketed as a teenager and that she was able to drop whole bottles of Jack Daniels a day before she turned 20.

Speaking to Belfast Telegraph, she clarified what triggered her addiction.

"I despised who I was. Every action I did, I would over-analyze to the point of having panic attacks," she said.

"On The X Factor, I spent so much time in the bathroom crying.

"Booze gave me so much, it was this magic juice that allowed me to come out of my shell."

Celebrating five years of recovery and a current sober lifestyle, Janet has released a new song, Away with the Fairies, which explores her alcoholism and sobriety.
