The Young Artists Competition returns on Saturday
PORT ANGELES — Young musicians — from singers to saxophonists — from across the region will come together this weekend to perform the classics and compete for cash prizes at the 37th annual Nico Snel Young Artist Competition.
The Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra is hosting the competition, which is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave.
Admission is free, masks recommended. Attendees can come for part of the event or stay the whole time.
They will hear young performers perform live music by masters ranging from Handel and Chopin to JS Bach and Paolo Tosti.
Each contestant chose a piece up to 10 minutes long to perform for the judges: Sequim pianist and composer Linda Dowdell, Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Jory Noble, and artistic director and conductor Jonathan Pasternak.
The trio will choose the winners and offer constructive feedback to each player.
“We are very happy to be in person again,” said Pasternack, noting that this is the first fully live competition since January 2020. Last year he judged competitors’ performances on videos they sent him and delivered his remarks on Zoom.
The participants in the junior competition, open to musicians aged 14 and under, are:
• Violinist Amalia Bell, a ninth grade student in Port Angeles;
• Pianist Amelia Jusko, a fourth-grade student in Port Angeles;
• Pianist Joshua Yearian, an eighth grade student from Port Townsend.
The senior competition, for musicians up to 22 years old, includes:
• Singer Liam Getzin, a freshman in Port Angeles;
• Violinist Anabel Moore, a high school student from Port Townsend;
• Alto saxophonist Maria Powell, a senior from Nordland;
• Violinist Aaliyah Yearian, a high school student from Port Townsend.
Senior contest winners will take home $500 for first place, $250 for second and $200 for third place. Junior competitors will earn $250 for first place, $125 for second and $75 for third.
Anonymous donors and the Port Angeles Symphony Board of Directors provide the competition prizes, as they have done for many years.
