Hundreds of Bollywood songs have been removed from Spotify after it failed to strike a licensing deal with an Indian record company.
The catalog of tracks from Zee Music Company, one of the largest record labels in the country, includes hits such as make me yours from the movie Bhediya (2022) the #1 track on Spotify in India for the past two weeks.
It disappeared along with other most streamed songs on the platform: Maiyya Mainu Since Jersey (2022), Makhna Since Conduct (2019), house house Since Kedarnath (2018) and Zaalima Since Raees (2017).
“Spotify and Zee Music have been unable to enter into a licensing agreement,” Spotify said. Billboard.
“Throughout these negotiations, Spotify has tried to find creative ways to reach an agreement with Zee Music and will continue our negotiations in good faith in the hope of finding a mutually acceptable solution soon.”
Spotify users expressed their disappointment on social media.
“Does Spotify have beef with Bollywood? Because they remove all the good songs. At this point I will remove Spotify,” one Twitter follower posted.
“They removed Bollywood songs from Spotify, it’s sad,” said another user.
“I’m so upset, it’s crazy,” one Bollywood music fan told the BBC, while another said she had canceled her Spotify subscription in protest.
Zee Music Company, which has over 93 million YouTube subscribers, is part of Zee Entertainment Enterprises, a media conglomerate with interests in television, print, websites, and film production and distribution.
At the end of last year, Spotify said it had over 205 million premium subscribers. It’s widely regarded as the biggest music streaming service in the world, although numbers from rivals Apple Music and Amazon Music aren’t readily available.
