Handgun magazine leads to Lincolnwood School lockdown

Lincolnwood Elementary School was closed after a student smuggled a handgun magazine into the building Tuesday morning, according to a news release from the Evanston Police Department.
According to the statement, EPD arrived in Lincolnwood after the 8-year-old student told his teacher about the magazine. Officers recovered the magazine and Evanston/Skokie School District 65 placed the school under lockdown as EPD and District 65 officials checked the building for firearms.
At 10:49 a.m., after about 90 minutes, EPD announced on Twitter that the lockdown was lifted.
According to the statement, officials did not find any firearms at the school. Police discovered that the magazine belonged to the student’s family member and found no intention of the student to cause harm.
“As we resume regular daily operations, we know this has disrupted our school day and students are likely experiencing a range of emotions,” said Terrance Little, Distinct 65 Deputy Superintendent of Operations, in an email to Lincolnwood families. “We send our district CARES team made up of our dedicated social workers to support students and classrooms as needed.”
