Is the pure horror genre in Hindi cinema dead?
Over the years, Hindi cinema has explored and found success in the horror-comedy genre with films like “Bhool Bhulaiyaa” and “Stree”. But pure horror is still unexplored in Bollywood and has also failed miserably. After seeing many failed Hindi horror movies, the question arises: is the horror genre in Bollywood dead?
Initial success and growing popularity of horror movies:
In 1949, “Mahal”, starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala, was one of the first blockbuster horror films made by Hindi cinema. The film introduced the concept of reincarnation to Bollywood and was a huge hit. It was followed by ‘Madhumati, starring Vyjayanthimala and Dilip Kumar, which was published in 1958 and followed a similar story of reincarnation. However, both films had an element of romance in them.
Meanwhile, movies like “Bees Saal Baad” and “Woh Kaun Thi?” had a little horror element but they mostly fall under the mystery thriller genre. However, after these early successes, Hindi cinema did not explore the horror genre much and films made in this genre were mediocre at best.
Is the horror genre in Bollywood dead?
The horror genre regained its popularity after the huge success of the 2002 movie “Raaz”, which starred Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea in the lead role. After the success of Raaz, films like ‘Bhoot’, ‘Darna Mana Hai’, ‘Krishna Cottage’ and ‘Kaal’ among others were released but they were not liked by the audience.
After ‘Raaz’, Vikram Bhatt directed ‘1920’ in 2008 which became a success. The filmmaker then directed three more episodes of “Raaz” and “1920: The Evil Returns”. However, there was nothing new to offer in these films and the plots were repetitive.
They still rely on the clichés like scary jumps and haunted mansions and it feels like Hindi horror movies have nothing new to offer. Romance and songs are always very present in many Bollywood horror films, which shifts the focus even if the premise is intriguing.
Underrated gems:
Movies like ’13B’ and ‘Tumbbad’ have dared to show something new in the horror genre and have grown in popularity over the years despite failing commercially when initially released. Especially ‘Tumbbad’ has gained cult classic status over the years and gained an appreciation for its interesting premise and cinematography.
Even though the Netflix movie “Bulbbul” has an element of horror, it will fall under the supernatural thriller genre. The film has also been praised over the years for its depiction of atrocities against women through myth and legend.
