Julio Csar Cedillo battles a killer shark in ‘The Black Demon’

I don’t like water, Cedillo told MySA in a recent interview. I barely step into the pool, and now I’m going to be in the ocean in the middle of nowhere? But then I thought as an actor sometimes you have to run into the fire and do the things that scare you the most.

Luckily for Cedillo, he wasn’t dumped in the middle of the Pacific Ocean when he landed the role of Chato, an oil rig operator who finds himself trapped with a family on a rig while a huge shark stalks them from the waters. For The black demonwhich is inspired by a Latin American folklore legend, the water scenes were shot in a tank at a studio in the Dominican Republic.

There were scenes where we had to get in the water, Cedillo said. I didn’t know if I could do this, but everyone was like, No, I’ll be fine. You have an air tank behind you. So everything was controlled.

Cedillo’s acting career began in the early 1990s, but it wasn’t until after his starring role in actor-director Tommy Lee Jones 2005’s Neo-Western, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, that it broke. He has starred in several movies and TV series over the past two decades, including the sci-fi action movie Cowboys and Aliens alongside Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, Narcos: Mexico, And queen of the south. In 2015, Cedillo shared the screen in a incredibly tense scene in crime drama Sicario with Oscar winner Benicio del Toro (Traffic).

For Cedillo, The black demon was something different from what he had ever done in his career. It was interesting to tackle a subgenre that includes an array of movies from a masterpiece like Steven Spielbergs Jaws to a Jason Statham action movie like Theme.

At the end of the day, [The Black Demon] is not Shakespeare, said Cedillo. It’s a popcorn movie with a little twist of new ideas. We didn’t have to reinvent the wheel. The film is about survival. Were there to entertain.

As a Latino actor, Cedillo also does his best to break down stereotypes in Hollywood. Although he’s played drug cartel characters in the past, it’s important to him that there’s some depth to those roles and that there’s room for him to shape them to a way that feels authentic.

I’ve played a gang member before, but it’s our job as actors to humanize the characters, he said. No one will ever write the perfect role. You need to flesh out these characters and bring them to life.

Going forward, Cedillo wants to continue to focus on being a working actor, someone who can take on any role presented to him, no matter how small, and make it his own. He once loved working with someone like Oscar-nominated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson (there will be blood) but remains open to all the opportunities that present themselves to him.

I’m a very specific type of actor, Cedillo said. I had to work hard. It’s not a glamorous life, but I love what I do. I want to work with whoever wants me as long as I am a servant of history. Otherwise, I’m dreaming at this point.

The black demon is currently playing in local theaters.
