Actor-director Manobala dies aged 69; Rajinikanth, others pay homage
Renowned Tamil actor-director Manobala died on Wednesday at the age of 69, prompting an outpouring of messages of condolence. Many prominent actors and politicians including Rajinikanth and AIADMK leader K Palaniswami mourned his death and expressed their shock after the news broke.
I am deeply saddened by the death of my dear friend Manobala, a famous director and actor. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace,” Rajinikanth tweeted.
Chief Minister MK Stalin called it an irreparable loss to Tamil cinema” and recalled a recent meeting Manobala had with him.
Beginning his career under the legendary filmmaker Bharathirajaa, Manobala had finally made his directorial debut with Agaya Gangai in 1982. Over the years, he continued to make films with stars such as Rajinikanth, Vijayakanth and Sathyaraj. He had also played supporting roles in a host of Tamil language films.
He had recently ventured into acting, largely limiting himself to comedic roles, and featured in a number of films with prominent actors, including Vijay and Dhanush. He also produced a few films.
AIADMK leader and opposition head of state Palaniswami recalled that Manobala was a “star speaker” in the party and presented his policies to the people in plain language laced with humour.
“His passing is a great loss for the party and the glitzy world,” he said.
