Victoria’s film industry faces slower season amid industrial action in Hollywood
There will be no new scripts from LA or anywhere else in the United States until the labor dispute between the Writers Guild and Hollywood is resolved
Labor unrest in Hollywood is causing a downturn in the U.S. film and TV production industry, but the local film industry will only be “a little slower than usual”, said Victoria’s film commissioner, Kathleen Gilbert.
Screenwriters at the Writers Guild of America have been on strike since May 2, and the 160,000 members of the SAG-AFTRA actors union began voting Thursday on whether to authorize a strike over upcoming negotiations with majors. Hollywood studios.

It’s hard to predict how labor issues will play out in the United States, but Victoria’s film industry will continue to work through the summer, Gilbert said.
“This strike does not affect commercials, it does not affect documentaries, it does not affect any Canadian production,” she said. “We continue to set up packages on a daily basis.”
A two month labor dispute last year by the British Columbia branch of the Directors Guild of Canada halted filming during the peak months of April and May, with only one Bollywood production booked during that time.
Although many shows are filmed in Victoria, BC’s second-largest film industry location outside of the Lower Mainland, the largest are still American productions.

Hollywood writers are striking for pay and job security in an industry transformed by streaming, as well as to push for regulations against the use of artificial intelligence in scriptwriting.
