Directors union reaches tentative deal with Hollywood studios as writers go on strike | American Writers’ Strike 2023

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) which represents film and television directors announcement late Saturday that he had reached an agreement in principle with the major Hollywood studios, avoiding a possible work stoppage.

The development comes as Hollywood writers are currently on strike and actors represented by the Sag-Aftra union are currently holding a vote to authorize a strike.

The DGA union will ask its 19,000 members to vote on the three-year interim contract, which includes wage gains, residuals and protections around the use of artificial intelligence. The agreement stipulates that generative AI cannot replace the functions carried out by the members. The deal came after several weeks of Hollywood writers going on strike. Previous negotiations between directors and studios took place earlier this year without reaching an agreement, but the negotiation restarted three weeks ago when the writers started their strike.

A ratification vote is scheduled for Tuesday, June 6.

Writers and actors have also sought protections included in contracts regarding the use of artificial intelligence. The writers have critical the rejection of their proposals around artificial intelligence by the studios, instead of being offered only annual meetings to discuss the issue. Before the directors reach a tentative agreement, the Writers Guild of America critical Hollywood studios are planning to use a deal with directors to force screenwriters to agree to similar terms to end their strike.

Sag-Aftra National Council Unanimously asked members to vote to authorize a strike, with voting open until late Monday, June 5. Negotiations with Hollywood studios for their new TV/theater deal are underway together start June 7.

More than 11,000 film and TV writers have been on strike since May 1 over what writers say have cut pay and residuals amid the rise of streaming services.

The strike halted production on several television and film projects iincluding Season 2 of Severance, the final season of Netflixs Stranger Things and Marvels Blade.
