Swift’s Eras tour plays at Ford Field this weekend – Daily Tribune

It’s as simple as that; there’s never been anything quite like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

The multi-hyphenate star’s sixth headlining tour, and first in five years, has sparked unprecedented and crippling market demand for tickets and memorabilia. By any measure, this is the hottest show ever on the road; you have to go back to Michael Jackson and his brothers’ 1984 Victory Tour for a similar stadium-level phenomenon, but the impact and consistency of social media put Eras on a whole new level.

The show arrives in Detroit this weekend, with concerts at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday June 9 and 10 at Ford Field, featuring Girl in Red opening on both nights, Gracie Abrams on Fridays and Owenn on Saturdays.

Here’s what everyone’s talking about as we tackle the Eras ride:

• Want tickets? : Don’t completely give up hope, but don’t expect miracles either. Demand was so high when the tickets went on sale in November that it broke the Ticketmaster system and took the company to court and to the US Congress over the group of fans. Even during show week, secondary sellers demand and get four-figure prices.

• It’s long — and comprehensive: Swift’s shows lasted about three hours and 15 minutes, more or less, with 44 songs per night. It’s divided into 10 sections, each dedicated to a specific studio album — excluding its 2006 debut, but including last year’s “Midnights,” which just returned to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 thanks to a new deluxe edition. The visuals are tailored to each “act”, executed across multiple stages whose design has even been praised by Architectural Digest. Lasers, pyrotechnics, projection mapping, interactive LED bracelets and costume changes are all part of the experience.

• Expect surprises: The ninth act of each show includes a two-song acoustic set for “surprise songs” from Swift’s catalog that are not part of the standard show. She also took the opportunity to welcome guests such as Marcus Mumford, Maren Morris and studio collaborators Jack Antonoff from Fun. and The National’s Aaron Dressner. If you want to speculate; Swift just announced this week that Paramore’s Hayley Williams is appearing on the upcoming “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” reissue of her 2010 album, and Paramore, who performed at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday, June 7, has a night of Friday off before a concert in Columbus. I’m just saying…

• Mega Goods: Demand for souvenirs kept pace with the massive scale of the tour – an average of over $40 per person. To help alleviate long lines (gross understatement), Swift merchandise will go on sale a day early – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 8 at Ford Field’s Gate B. They will also go on sale from noon on the day of each show.

• Quick trigger: Among other phenomena on the tour, large numbers of ticketless fans gathered in public areas outside of venues to listen and share the experience. It may be different in Detroit, however, as the Ford Field dome will keep the sound of the shows inside the building.

• Come early: Friday’s show in particular will be held alongside a Detroit Tigers home game next door at Comerica Park and events at other nearby venues. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with music starting at 6:30 p.m.

• It restores: Fast, which is making a habit of helping fans in financial difficulty (including $13,000 to Harrison Township’s Shelbie Selewski last December) or with health issues. For the Eras tour, she donated to local food banks in each city.
