ALBANY— New York State Senator Joseph A. Griffo, R-53, Rome, and Assemblyman Alex Bores, a New York Democrat, announced on Tuesday that they had tabled legislation that they say them, would help mitigate unwanted telemarketing calls. and Assembly.
The bill (S4617/A4465) would deter potential do-not-call registry violators by nearly doubling the fine per violation, encouraging better compliance with the law. The fine would increase from $11,000 to $20,000.
“While the Do Not Call Registry has been an effective tool in reducing the number of spam calls, some are breaking the law in hopes of winning business from unsuspecting participants,” Griffo said. “These annoying and annoying telemarketing calls, which come in at all hours of the day and night, are a major annoyance for many New Yorkers. I hope this bill will reduce the number of unwanted calls that occur every day.
“Too many telemarketers view current fines as the cost of doing business,” Bores said. “Today we say, enough is enough. By increasing the fines, we hope to discourage bad actors from ruining more family dinners.
Griffo supported a law requiring telemarketers making live sales calls to notify customers that they can request that their number be added to the seller’s entity’s do not call list. He also introduced legislation that would require telecommunications companies to provide free call mitigation technology to their customers in order to stop fraudulent “spoofing” calls.
