Hollywood Burbank Airport Almost Empty During Coronavirus Pandemic

Hollywood Burbank Airport had its best year ever with nearly 6 million passengers in 2019, but the installation scene on Tuesday morning suggests that this year's statistics will be entirely different.

The airline employees stood behind their counters, but there were few passengers waiting to check in. The property's valet service, which typically has at least 30 vehicles waiting and waiting, was completely empty.

The restaurants in Terminal A were clientless, with only a handful of people having a drink in a bar. Most of the passengers waiting for their flights remained at a distance from each other and some wore masks and gloves.

Concerns about the new coronavirus mean that many potential travelers stay at home and practice social distancing.

But some still brave airports and take flights. Robert Morse of Tucson, Arizona, was at Burbank Airport on Tuesday awaiting his return flight.

He had been in Southern California since March 12 to visit his daughter, who lives in Carpinteria.

Despite warnings from health officials to avoid traveling unless necessary, Morse said he was not afraid of the coronavirus, although he noted that her grandfather died in 1918 from the Spanish flu pandemic.

I've been through swine flu, so I think I could get out of it, said Morse with a chuckle.

On Monday, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority held a regular meeting at the airport Skyroom, but commissioners Don Brown, Vrej Agajanian and Ray Adams were the only attendees in person, commissioners Steve Madison, Bill Wiggins, Ross Selvidge and Paula Devine called; Vartan Gharpetian was absent and Terry Tornek was in Africa for business in the city of Pasadena.

Airport staff have informed the commissioners that business at Hollywood Burbank is and will continue to be severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Each of the seven airlines operating at Burbank Airport has seen its bookings decrease in the first week of March or will reduce the number of flights by April, we learned.

Although there has been a significant drop in the number of passengers, airport staff said sales at newsstands and airport kiosks increased 3% due to the 39; purchase of health and sanitation products by people.

Also during the first week of the month, hand sanitizer dispensers were installed in almost every corner and aisle of the terminals. In addition, concierge staff use a new cleaning product that is said to be more effective at disinfecting all surfaces.

Travelers Mark Johnson, his wife Angela and their three daughters were among the many passengers found Tuesday morning using hand sanitizer dispensers while waiting for their flight back to Minnesota.

The Johnson's spent 10 days in Ventura County visiting family and said concerns about the coronavirus had never really crossed their minds.

I think a lot is exaggerated by the media in general, so if I'm not really worried about the flu, I'm not really worried about COVID-19, said Mark Johnson.

While they weren't worried about getting the new coronavirus, Angela Johnson said they had taken precautionary measures like most travelers by wiping all surfaces with disinfectant wipes and keeping their hands clean.

I have taken the same precautions as I do for flu season with my daughters for what is happening now, she said.

The only concerns the Johnson's had before their flight were choosing which of the vacant rows they wanted to occupy during their flight.

Everyone should relax and enjoy the slower pace of life right now, said Mark Johnson. Everything will work.
