LASD to conduct bicycle and pedestrian safety operation in West Hollywood

THE Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will conduct a traffic safety operation on April 17 from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. focusing on the most dangerous driving behaviors that endanger the safety of cyclists or pedestrians in West Hollywood.

These violations include speeding, illegal turns, failing to yield the right of way or give way to cyclists or pedestrians, or failing to stop at signs and signals.

We all have somewhere to go and not everyone gets there by car, said Sergeant Michael Lennig. Cyclists and pedestrians have the same rights on the road but face even more risks without the protections available to vehicles. We should all look out for each other.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department offers steps drivers and pedestrians can take to significantly reduce the risk of injury or crash:

Pedestrians

Be predictable. Use pedestrian crossings when available.
Watch for approaching vehicles and use caution.
Do not walk or run into the path of a vehicle. At 30 mph, a driver must stop at least 90 feet away.
To be visible. Make it easy for drivers to see you wearing light colors, reflective materials, and carrying a flashlight, especially at dawn, dusk, or nighttime.
Use extra caution when crossing streets or entering crosswalks at night when it is harder to see, or when crossing busier streets with more lanes and higher speed limits.

Drivers

Obey speed limits and slow down at intersections. Be prepared to stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
Avoid blocking pedestrian crossings while waiting to turn right.
Never drive while impaired.

Cyclists

Obey traffic laws, use hand signals, use lights at night (front white light and rear reflector) and wear a helmet.
Cyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and meet the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle.
Avoid the door area: don't get too close to parked cars.
If there is a bike lane, use it unless you are turning left, passing, or approaching a place where a right turn is permitted.
Yield Here To Pedestrians. Cyclists must yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks or in unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
