Francis Ford Coppola kissed 'Megapolis' extras: report
Megalopolis Co-executive producer Darren Demeter has denied allegations published this week that director Francis Ford Coppola attempted to kiss female extras during filming.
“I was never aware of any complaints of harassment or bad behavior during the project,” Demeter said. The Hollywood Reporter in response to reports in The Guardian who alleged that Coppola displayed “old-fashioned” behavior towards women during the filming of his Megalopolis passion project.
Specifically, the report cites sources that Coppola pushed women to sit on his lap and attempted to kiss several topless or scantily clad female extras during the filming of a nightclub scene.
“I have known and worked with Francis and his family for over 35 years,” Demeter said. “As one of the first assistant directors and executive producer of his new epic, Megalopolis, I helped supervise and advise the production and managed the second unit. Francis successfully produced and directed a huge independent film, making all the difficult decisions to ensure it was delivered on time and on budget, while remaining true to his creative vision. There were two days where we shot a Studio 54-style club party scene, where Francis would walk around the set establishing the spirit of the scene by giving gentle hugs and kisses on the cheek to the actors and background actors. It was his way of helping to inspire and establish the atmosphere of the club, which was so important to the film. I was never aware of any complaints of harassment or bad behavior during the project.
Megalopolis is Coppola's self-financed and much-discussed epic, four decades in the making. The director began writing the project in 1983 and sold part of his wine empire in 2021 to self-finance the $120 million project.
The film, a Roman epic told in American science fiction, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, although it still does not have a North American distributor (it has secured distribution at the 'stranger last week).
The first trailer for the film was released on Monday, starring Adam Driver as an idealistic architect opposite Giancarlo Esposito as a pragmatic mayor. The cast also includes Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, DB Sweeney and Dustin Hoffman.
