David Copperfield: magician accused of sexual misconduct
Magician David Copperfield has been accused of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior by 16 women.
Some of the alleged offenses took place when the women were under 18, the Guardian newspaper reported, external.
The allegations date from the late 1980s and 2014.
A representative for Copperfield told BBC News the allegations were “false and slanderous” and “the exact opposite of who David is.”
According to the Guardian, three of the women claim the magician drugged them before having sex with them. They said they did not feel able to consent.
In four cases, women claimed the magician groped them or forced them to touch him in a sexual manner during live stage performances.
One woman said she met Copperfield in 1991, when she was 15, and that he kept in touch with her by telephone.
When she was 18, she says they had consensual sex, but the woman told the Guardian she thought she had been groomed.
Copperfield's lawyers acknowledged the relationship with the newspaper but denied any attempt at manipulation.
In a separate statement to the BBC, his lawyers said: “Anyone who knows David Copperfield will tell you that these recent newspaper allegations are the exact opposite of who David is.
“In fact, David has a history of risking his career to help protect women from powerful predators.
“Most of these historical accusations have been made before, and they are all as false today as they were then. David asked for the 'evidence' on which these false allegations purport to be based and these n were not provided.
“In contrast, every time U.S. law enforcement has looked into such cases, they have been thoroughly investigated and it turns out there is simply no evidence to answer.
“The Guardian's description does not match David, and he continues to support anyone who has suffered any form of abuse or discrimination. The movement must succeed, but the false accusations must stop for it to thrive. David will review the post with its lawyer team and will take all appropriate measures in the face of these false and slanderous allegations.
Copperfield has previously been accused of inappropriate behavior, and in 2018 he denied historical allegations of sexual misconduct.
“I lived with years of reports that I was accused of fabricated heinous acts, with little reporting telling the story of the arrested accuser and my innocence,” he wrote on X/ Twitter at the time.
Copperfield is one of America's most famous magicians. He has won 21 Emmy Awards and holds 11 Guinness World Records.
