The Constitution Actor Jason Shah, who played the character Cartwright in the series, shared his thoughts on co-actor Sharmin Segal's performance in an interview with Live entertainment. Sharmin Segal, who plays the character Alamzeb in the series, has been criticized for her “expressionless” performance since the series' release. Speaking about the trolling Sharmin faced, Jason said: “I thought, personally, there should have been a greater escalation of emotion in different places.” He continued, “I remember Sanjay also saying, 'Stop acting with your head, act with your heart'. But I don't know, maybe that's what they expected from her. Maybe -maybe that was the tone they were looking for from her. But it was the director's decision. We worked together quite easily as such.
When asked if Sharmin had been given specific instructions for a muted performance, Jason said, “Maybe, that's what I think. Otherwise, if she wasn't told to keep a level tone, I felt the character had a lot of space.” and lots of possibilities to do lots of different things, I didn't feel like it had been fully explored. But I'm not the director.
Earlier, casting director Shruti Mahajan also defended Sharmin's casting and spoke about the audition process Sharmin had to undergo before being finalized for the role of Alamzeb. Shruti told Hindustan Times, “She went through the entire process just like other actors. The process for everyone was the same. They had to go through rounds of auditions and take tests.”
Sharmin, who appeared on The Great Indian Kapil Show with the cast of the show, revealed that she auditioned for the role 16 times despite being Sanjay Leela Bhansali's niece. When Kapil asked, “Kya unhone aapka sach me audition liya tha ya aapne unko mamu banaya?” (Did they really audition you or did you just benefit from the uncle-niece relationship?)”, Sharmin replied that the process included 16 rounds of audition. She said on the show: “Ek saal ke liye prepare kiya for 16 baar auditions diye” (I prepared for a year and gave 16 auditions for the role).”
