Uvalde's mother faces daily 'nightmare' over gun reform
The arrival of a child highlights the parents' life purpose. Keep the baby scented with that intoxicating newborn smell. Shower them with love, hugs and kisses. Teach them colors and numbers and how to be good at them. New purpose also emerges from the unimaginable and untimely death of a child, as Kimberly Mata-Rubio knows all too well.
On the morning of May 24, 2022, Mata-Rubio attended awards ceremonies for two of her five children at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, a small Texas town about 90 minutes west of San Antonio. Mata-Rubio watched her motivated and compassionate 10-year-old daughter Alexandria Lexi Rubio receive a good citizen award and recognition for her place on the school honor roll. Then Mata-Rubio headed towards the Uvalde Leader-News, where she worked as a journalist. It was a decision that seemed like nothing at the time, but which still haunts her today.
I should have taken her home after the awards ceremony, says Mata-Rubio, 35. I always take her home after the awards ceremonies, and I'm the one responsible for it.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., Salvador Ramos, 18, entered the school and began shooting an AR-15-style rifle. He murdered Lexi and 18 other students, all aged just 9 to 11, as well as two teachers before being killed by police officers at the scene. The victims' families settled a lawsuit with the city of Uvalde for $2 million on Wednesday, according to several reports. How Mata-Rubio and her colleagues at the newspaper grappled with this global tragedy is the focus of an ABC News documentary, Print It Black, released on Hulu on Friday, the second anniversary of the shooting.

The project takes its name from the blacked-out front page of the newspaper from May 26, 2022, commemorating the date of the shooting in large white text. In addition to chronicling the day of the shooting, “Print It Black” depicts the ouster of former Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo, the political division within the small community and the work of Mata-Rubio’s plea.
My biggest responsibility is to share Lexi's story and make sure no one ever forgets her, Mata-Rubio told USA TODAY. I want to prevent other moms from experiencing the heartache I feel.
Mata-Rubio describes the last two years as a nightmare that I can't wake up from. I feel like the first year you're still in shock and there's a lot of numbness. And then the second year comes, and it's been so long since I heard her voice, saw her, hugged her. The idea that I will never be able to do these things again is too painful to accept.
Mata-Rubio doesn't want her daughter's memory tied to the shooting. She wants Lexi to be associated with change and gun reform. So Mata-Rubio, once shy, now persists in overcoming her nervousness about speaking in public. She testified at a U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing on gun violence in 2022, and again at the House Select Committee on Security hearing. community last year for a bill proposing to raise the age of purchase of these types of weapons. She attends rallies, marches and vigils and speaks on panels.
People forget quickly, and I know it, says Mata-Rubio. So she's working to get Lexi's story out there as much as possible. This is what happened to him. This is how this could have been avoided. That's why you should join the fight to end gun violence.
Mata-Rubio hopes to ban assault rifles at the federal level or raise the age of purchasing these types of weapons in Texas from 18 to 21. Last year, Mata-Rubio ran for mayor of Uvalde and won 33 percent of the vote, but lost. to former Mayor Cody Smith. Mata-Rubio now plans to pursue a law degree.
It's like a part of us died that day, says Mata-Rubio. The people we were simply ceased to exist, and now here we are, just trying to find our place.
After her death, Lexi is depicted at family events with pictures. Her father, Felix Rubio, held a large photo of Lexi in a family photo marking his wife's college graduation. Mata-Rubio held an image of Lexi in sunflowers as she posed next to Kamala Harris in December. Lexi visited the vice presidents' residence, she wrote of the moment on Instagram.
We always take Lexi with us, says Mata-Rubio. This is how I get through the really tough times. Ten years isn't enough, and there are so many things she hasn't been able to see and experience for herself, so I'm taking her with me.
Mata-Rubio's four living children are also dedicated to honoring Lexi, Mata-Rubio said. She is the priority and it is beautiful to see their love for her.
It's a moment between Lexi and Mata-Rubio's youngest son that the mother cherishes as one of her happiest.
We took them to baseball and softball practice the last Sunday before (the shooting),” Mata-Rubio said. The kids would just throw the ball around and play. And my youngest son, he said to him: Oh, you throw like a girl. And she says, I don't know what you're talking about. You have noodle arms. You're the one who throws like a girl. And just seeing their playful banter, their interaction with each other. I really, really, really love my family and they deserve so much more. We all deserve so much more.
