Trump Sends Cease and Desist Letter Regarding 'The Apprentice' Movie

Donald Trump's lawyers are trying to prevent a US sale of The apprentice walking out of Cannes slapping filmmakers with a cease and desist letter, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.

Still, the filmmakers behind the Trump film don't appear to be deterred from seeking to distribute the film in the United States. “The film is a fair and balanced portrait of the former president. We want everyone to see it and then decide,” a representative for the film's producers said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter Friday.

This legal decision by Trump's legal team follows director Ali Abbasi's film receiving a world premiere at Cannes and an eight-minute standing ovation earlier this week.

Abbasi has already ignored the Trump presidential campaign's threat to take legal action against the project. “Everyone talks about his prosecution of a lot of people – but they don’t talk about his success rate, you know?” Abbasi said at the Cannes press conference for The apprentice.

The apprentice explores Donald Trump's rise to power in 1980s America, under the influence of incendiary right-wing lawyer Roy Cohn. Sebastian Stan plays a younger version of the real estate mogul in the pre-MAGA era, while Succession star Jeremy Strong plays Cohn, alongside Martin Donovan (Principle) as Fred Trump Sr. and Oscar nominee Maria BakalovaLater Borat film) like Ivana Trump.

The film has been described as a surprisingly humanistic portrait of the global icon and former US president now known simply as “Donald”, but it also contains several disturbing and deeply unflattering scenes, including a sequence in which he rapes his first wife Ivana, has liposuction and surgery for her baldness, becomes addicted to diet pills and betrays the trust of many of her loved ones.

One of the investors in The apprenticeDan Snyder, former owner of the Washington Commanders, is reportedly angry at the film's portrayal of Trump and has threatened to issue his own cease-and-desist letter to block a U.S. distribution deal.
