Harrison Butker breaks his silence on controversial keynote speech
Harrison Butker has finally responded to the backlash he faced following the sexist and homophobic graduation speech he gave two weeks ago, and he made it clear the outrage didn't get him changed my mind at all.
Instead, Butker told the crowd at the Courage Under Fire gala that the backlash only demonstrated how timeless Catholic values were under attack.
Speaking at the gala, hosted by hybrid Catholic PreK-12 Homeschool Regina Caeli Academy, where Butker is a board member, the Kansas City Chiefs kicker doubled down on controversial remarks made at Benedictine College.
Over the past few days, my beliefs, or what people think of me, have been the focus of countless discussions around the world, Butker said. At first, many people expressed a shocking level of hatred.
In the Benedictines' opening speech, Butker called gay pride a mortal sin and denounced abortion, IVF and surrogacy. He also told the female graduates that their enthusiasm for professional success came from the most evil lies told to women, and suggested they adopt one of the most important titles of all: housewife.
Predictably, the speech was met with vitriol, sparking a petition on Change.org to have Butker fired from the Chiefs and prompting the NFL and some of Butker's high-profile teammates to distance themselves from him.
Others, however, defended the kicker citing freedom of speech. Whoopi Goldberg compared Butker to Colin Kaepernick, who took a knee to protest police brutality during the national anthem before games. This support did not go unnoticed by the Chiefs kicker.
But as the days passed, Butker continued, even those who disagreed with my views shared their support for my religious freedom.
Butker added that he was used to public scrutiny of his performance on the football field, but that couldn't compare to the hatred he had for his speech.
But predictably, the more I talk about what I value most, namely my Catholic faith, the more polarizing I have become. “It’s a decision I made consciously and one I don’t regret at all,” Butker said.
