Heeramandis Jason Shah opens up about his differences of opinion with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and says assistants directed most of his scenes | Bollywood News
Actor Jason Shah, who appeared as villain Cartwright in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut streaming series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, has spoken about the “stressful” atmosphere on set and the lack of communication he received on his character from Bhansali's aides. In an interview, he said that he didn't really have conversations with Bhansali and would have preferred more creative interactions as they would have helped his performance.
Chatting to Bollywood Now, the actor said that he received conflicting instructions on set from Bhansali and his assistants, which only further affected his performance. He said he personally would have preferred to play the cruel Cartwright in a more humane manner, but Bhansali specifically told him to avoid injecting heat into his performance. “I'm grateful for the opportunity, but I felt there could have been a slightly different twist. When I asked Sanjay if I liked these women, he looked at me and said “no”.

Jason continued, “But a few days later, with her other director, Mitakshara, when I was working with her, she asked me, 'Why are you so cold to these women?' I said, “Because Sanjay sir said I don't like them.” I felt like I could have kept it a little softer and not been so distant in a way. isn't it? Even an officer who sleeps with a prostitute, and who has this relationship, ultimately, over time, there is a certain sweetness that goes with it…”
Jason said Bhansali never directed him. “It was mainly the other directors who were there. All he asked me was, “Do you think we got this shot?” » And that was the big moment of the scene where Mallikajaan gets raped. Once he looked at me and said, “You look a little fat today.” And I was a little bloated… He didn't bring much to my character. I wanted to sit with him a little more, understand a little more.
Jason said he was not given the entire script to read beforehand and therefore had no idea of the series' larger narrative. He also said that he often showed up on set without being told who he would be performing with that day, and that he was regularly he is only given 45 minutes to complete his scenes. All of this robbed him of the opportunity to add more nuance to his performance. “I felt like there was a lot of stress to get things done. There were two units working most of the time, so it could also be stressful for the team,” he said.
