COOPERSTOWN Smithys' first opening reception of the season will be held on Tuesday, June 4 from 5-7 p.m. The first exhibition, titled and themed Clay, will be on display at the Smithy Gallery from June 4 to July 13 on all three floors.
According to a press release, clay will serve as the central support for all of the works on display. Artists will illustrate how clay can serve as a useful and diverse form of media in all aspects of creating and pursuing artistic expression.
The works are by Smithy member artists as well as guest artists Veronica Byun, Jasmine Crowe, Naomi DeMuth, Rhonda Engel, Diana Hall, Megan Irving, Richard Marchant, Eileen Murphy, Gloria Nixon-Crouch, Pam Noonan and Anna Sea.
Gallery visitors are invited to get their hands on the clay, provided daily throughout the exhibition, and create a spool to place on an active spool container on the first floor of the exhibition. A container model will also be available as part of this crafting station to illustrate the different ways the clay coils can be used, ensuring an innovative process.
Interactive Raku firing demonstrations by Kyle Pumilio, Director of Smithy Clay Studio, will be presented from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 20.
Raku is described as a traditional Japanese pottery technique known for its unique and unpredictable glazing effects and rapid firing process. Originating in the 16th century, it involves removing pieces from a hot kiln and placing them in combustible materials to create distinctive textures and colors. The method emphasizes spontaneity and embraces imperfections, making each piece one of a kind.
